'The protectors have said that the nectar of the teachings is neither one nor different, neither permanent nor impermanent.' And: 'Those who think they are skilled in the meaning of the teachings, regarding things, self, and entities, as being with or different from them, do not understand the meaning of the teachings.' As it is said in the 'Precious Garland': 'If the numerologists and owlets of the world, and the naked ones, etc., speak of existence, non-existence, and transcendence, they should be questioned. Therefore, the teachings of the Buddhas are beyond death and immortality, existence and non-existence, called profound, and should be regarded as the essence of the Dharma.' Etc. The intention of the Buddhas is to show the Middle Way, abandoning permanence and annihilation. Therefore, it is very clear that all noble ones who have well entered the teachings abide in the Middle Way. Otherwise, they would not have well entered the teachings. Therefore, to think of the Madhyamikas and the Mahayanists as one, and to say that even if one understands the selflessness of the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, one is not a Madhyamika, is merely following after the sound, like the call of a rabbit. Not only in the Madhyamika system, but also in the systems of the lower schools of tenets, all the noble ones of the three vehicles are considered to abide in the Middle Way, abandoning permanence and annihilation according to their own systems. This is because the teachings of the Buddhas, which show the Middle Way abandoning permanence and annihilation, are superior to others, and because they claim that their own tenets are not contrary to the teachings of the Buddhas, and because all the noble ones are considered to have well entered the teachings. How do the proponents of tenets abandon permanence and annihilation? There are two ways: abandoning permanence and annihilation in relation to phenomena, and abandoning permanence and annihilation in relation to individuals. The first can be further divided into abandoning permanence and annihilation in relation to general cause and effect, and abandoning permanence and annihilation in relation to the relationship of karma and its result. In the first case, both the Vaibhashikas and the Sautrantikas believe that external and internal objects are destroyed in an instant, and that a result that is in accordance with the cause arises, so they do not fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation. This is how they abandon permanence and annihilation in relation to general cause and effect. In relation to karma and its result, the Vaibhashikas believe that as soon as virtuous and non-virtuous actions are done, their nature is destroyed, so they are not permanent. But because their continuum is connected, the ripening is not wasted, so they do not fall into the extreme of annihilation. The Sautrantikas believe that a seed that produces a result that is in accordance with itself arises with a special characteristic of transforming the continuum, and this will produce the ripening in the future, so they do not fall into the extreme of annihilation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I wish to abandon the extremes of permanence and annihilation, which is the way to avoid the views of permanence and annihilation in the context of cause and effect. Because in both, there is no self-nature of a self that is the object of the view of destruction, so neither permanence nor impermanence can be established. Therefore, in the realm of the person, the extremes of permanence and annihilation are avoided. All these meanings of being free from extremes are realized by all the noble ones of the three vehicles (Sanskrit: Triyāna, referring to the Śrāvakayāna, Pratyekabuddhayāna, and Bodhisattvayāna). The Mind-Only school believes that the completely imputed (Sanskrit: Parikalpita), which is falsely imputed on the grasper and the grasped, its self-nature is not established, so it does not fall into the extreme of permanence. And the other-dependent (Sanskrit: Paratantra) impure conceptualization is truly existent in ultimate truth, so it does not fall into the extreme of annihilation. This is the way to avoid permanence and annihilation in the overall cause and effect. As it is said in the *Madhyāntavibhāga*: 'The unreal appearance is only mind; In it, both natures are not present; Emptiness is also present in it; This is also always not absent in that. Because of existence, non-existence, and existence; This is called the Middle Way.' Because the action disappears immediately after it is done, it is not permanent. But at the same time, the seed of the result that is in accordance with the action is placed in the *Ālayavijñāna* (Sanskrit: Ālayavijñāna), so later the result will arise according to the conditions, so it is not annihilation. This is the way to avoid permanence and annihilation in the context of cause and effect. The aggregates (Sanskrit: Skandha) do not have the characteristic of a self that is imputed by others, so it is not permanent. But the aggregates exist only as dharmas, so it is not annihilation. This is the way to avoid permanence and annihilation in the person. To this, the noble Bodhisattvas realize all freedom from extremes, while the noble Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the freedom from the extremes of permanence and annihilation in the realm of the person. The Madhyamaka school believes that if the cause and the result are the same, then at the time of the result, the cause has not ceased, so it will become permanent. If it is other, then if the result is something else, it will not be able to avoid the fault of annihilation. For example, because there is a cow, the horse will not not die. Therefore, if the cause ceases at the time of the result, then the cause and the result are neither the same nor other, so it does not fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation. As quoted before: 'From that, it arises from that,' and so on. This is the way to avoid permanence and annihilation in conventional truth. If things have a little bit of self-nature, then because it is impossible to have other forms, it will become permanent or impermanent. But in fact, things do not have any self-nature at all, so neither permanence nor impermanence can be analyzed. As it is said: 'Also, all things, Because of emptiness, all wrong views such as permanence, In whom, where, for what reason, Why can anything arise at all?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
