A Treatise Differentiating the Realizations of the Three Vehicles of the Noble Ones - An Elucidation of Reasoning and Scripture I prostrate to all the Victorious Ones of the ten directions together with their spiritual offspring! With a crown of Delightful Mind, Joyful One, Possessor of Gold, And the Robber, whose light cleanses the dust from my feet, I pay homage to the Teacher of the Three Realms, the King of the Shakyas. The distinctions in the realizations of the three vehicles of the Noble Ones, Who other than the Omniscient One could fathom? Nevertheless, I will properly distinguish the tenets of the great chariots. Here, regarding the differences in the realizations of the three noble ones, two views are seen: that of the Shravaka schools and that of the Mahayana teachers. Among them, the Vaibhashikas and Sautrantikas hold that there is no difference in the view and realization of the noble ones of the three vehicles. All of them are liberated from the afflictive obscurations by realizing only the absence of self of the person through the sixteen aspects of the four truths, such as impermanence, and attain their respective bodhi. And they do not accept the absence of self of phenomena. The reason for this is that they do not accept the sutras that teach the absence of inherent existence of phenomena as the words of the Buddha, and they do not accept that the absence of self of phenomena is taught in the Shravaka Pitaka. However, there is a difference in the extent of realization. The Abhidharmakosha states: 'Arhats, Pratyekabuddhas, and Buddhas see two, three, and countless thousands.' That is, the divine eye of the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Buddhas can see two thousand, three thousand, and countless three thousand worlds in order. It also states: 'Shravakas see two moments, Pratyekabuddhas see three knowledges, Buddhas see all without combination.' That is, they also see with the knowledge of others' minds in the two and three moments of the path of seeing and at all times. According to their view, how are the three vehicles distinguished? They are distinguished by the generation of bodhicitta, the way of accumulating the ripening accumulations, and the way of arising of the liberating direct realization. First, the Vinaya Sutra states: 'Some generate the mind for the bodhi of the Shravakas, some generate the mind for the bodhi of the Pratyekabuddhas, and some generate the mind for the unsurpassed perfect and complete enlightenment.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus it is said. Secondly, if the Śrāvakas (Listeners) are diligent, they can complete the path of accumulation (saṃbhāra-mārga) in one lifetime and quickly be liberated from the three realms of existence (trayo bhava). It is said that in the first life, they accumulate merit; in the second, they generate the path of application (prayoga-mārga); and in the third, they generate the path of seeing (darśana-mārga) and attain liberation. Self-realizers like rhinoceroses need to accumulate the collection that ripens the continuum for a hundred eons (kalpa), as it is said, 'The rhinoceros needs a hundred eons of causes.' Bodhisattvas ripen the continuum with the collection of merit for three countless great eons (asaṃkhyeya-kalpa), as it is said, 'He is called a Buddha after three countless eons.' Thirdly, the Śrāvakas, through the three paths of application, seeing, and meditation (bhāvanā-mārga), can complete them in one or two lifetimes if they are very fast, but it is impossible to complete them in one sitting. However, self-realizers like rhinoceroses and Buddhas generate all realizations in one sitting, as it is said, 'The teacher, the rhinoceros, and enlightenment (bodhi), all rely on one meditation at the end.' Regarding the difference in abandonment, all three abandon the afflictive obscurations (kleśa-āvaraṇa) without exception, but there is no difference in this. However, the Śrāvakas and self-realizers have not abandoned the subtle habitual tendencies (vāsanā) of the three doors (body, speech, and mind), while the Buddhas have abandoned them completely. The wisdom (prajñā) of the Śrāvakas only comes from liberation, so they have not abandoned the obscurations of meditative absorption (samāpatti) either. The Śrāvakas and self-realizers, in places and times (eons) and in places that are subtle in nature, abandon non-afflictive ignorance (ajñāna) and desires with an attitude free from attachment, but they do not abandon them in a way that they do not appear in conventional reality (saṃvṛti). The Buddhas, in all places and times, abandon the darkness of ignorance in a way that it never arises again. If there is no difference in realization, it is unreasonable to have a difference in abandonment. The explanation for this is that it changes due to the difference in the sharpness and dullness of the faculties (indriya) by nature, and the difference in whether or not one has trained the mind for a long time in the object of knowledge (jñeya). As it says in the Pramāṇavārttika (Commentary on Valid Cognition), 'Through many methods and means, as a result of long-term training, the qualities and faults of that become very clear.' And, 'Because of habituation, everything is abandoned.' As the scriptures say. The quotations from the Abhidharmakośa (Treasury of Knowledge) cited earlier are also accepted by the Sautrāntikas (Sūtra Followers) because there is no prohibition and no unreasonable logic. Among the Mahāyāna (Great Vehicle) masters, the view of the brothers Asaṅga (无著) who followed the teachings of Maitreyanātha (慈氏): The Mahāyāna masters believe that the brothers Asaṅga who followed the teachings of Maitreyanātha... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
