Furthermore, there are two systems: those of the noble Nāgārjuna (འཕགས་པ་ཀླུ་སྒྲུབ་) and his spiritual sons. Among these, the former assert that Śrāvakas (ཉན་ཐོས་) and Pratyekabuddhas (རང་རྒྱལ་) do not realize the absence of self of phenomena (ཆོས་ཀྱི་བདག་མེད་) due to two reasons: unclear intelligence and lack of diligent inquiry. Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas only train their minds on the coarse characteristics of self (རང་གི་མཚན་ཉིད་) and generalities (སྤྱིའི་མཚན་ཉིད་), not on the subtle ones. This is because they are unable to know the subtle characteristics of self and generalities due to their weak intelligence; and because they only seek liberation (རྣམ་གྲོལ་) and do not take it upon themselves to know the vast expanse of knowable objects, they do not train their minds on the subtle aspects of knowable objects. The coarse characteristic of self refers to the aggregates (ཕུང་པོ་), elements (ཁམས་), and sources (སྐྱེ་མཆེད་). The subtle one refers to the ālaya-vijñāna From hearing and contemplating the first nature as it is, the realization of the absence of self of persons (གང་ཟག་གི་བདག་མེད་པ་) arises, while from being deluded in a reversed manner, the imputation of a self of persons (གང་ཟག་གི་བདག་ཏུ་སྒྲོ་འདོགས་པ་) arises. From being deluded about the second nature, conceptions such as considering Īśvara (དབང་ཕྱུག་) and a creator (གཙོ་བོ་བྱེད་པ་པོར་) as dharmas, and innate conceptions such as being attached to the appearance of grasper and grasped, arise. From realizing its nature without reversing it, the realization of the absence of self of phenomena arises, because it is the state of the three natures of knowable objects (ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་གསུམ་), and because the three absences of inherent existence (ངོ་བོ་ཉིད་མེད་པ་གསུམ་) are also the absence of self of phenomena. The coarse generality is the absence of self of persons, and the subtle one is the absence of self of phenomena. Since Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas only seek liberation, they only train their minds on the coarse characteristics of self and generalities, and even with just that, they attain their desired nirvāṇa (མྱང་འདས་). Furthermore, since the Śrāvakapiṭaka (ཉན་ཐོས་ཀྱི་སྡེ་སྣོད་) does not teach the absence of self of phenomena, and even though the Mahāyānapiṭaka (ཐེག་པ་ཆེན་པོའི་སྡེ་སྣོད་) does teach the absence of self of phenomena, Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not train their minds on it. As stated in the Ratnāvalī (རྒྱན་): 'Those who have abandoned the vast bodhicitta, abandon the thought of benefiting others and the means to it, abandon the profound meaning and its supreme vision, and go to peace, abandoning that bliss.' Therefore, since they do not have the intention to benefit others, it is explained that they do not realize the meaning of the Mahāyāna sūtras (ཐེག་ཆེན་གྱི་མདོ་སྡེ་) through hearing and contemplation, nor do they manifest it through meditation-born wisdom (སྒོམ་བྱུང་). If the two absences of self are not initially determined through hearing and contemplation, then it is impossible to manifest them later through meditation-born wisdom, because the meaning of what is heard needs to be analyzed with reason in accordance with the way it is. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Wisdom born of thought arises from listening, and in order to generate the correct wisdom that actualizes the object of meditation from meditating single-mindedly on the meaning of what has been thought. As it is said in the Ornament [for Clear Realization, Abhisamayalankara]: 'Here, first, based on listening, proper attention arises. From proper attention, the wisdom of the true object also arises.' Furthermore, in the Explanation of the Thought [Explication of the Thought Sutra, Samdhinirmocana Sutra]: 'The taking consciousness is deep and subtle. All seeds flow like a river. It is not right to conceive of it as self. This I have not shown to children.' This explains that the alaya consciousness [storehouse consciousness] was not shown as it is to those of the Hearer [Shravaka] and Solitary Realizer [Pratyekabuddha] lineages. Moreover, without realizing the alaya consciousness, one cannot realize the nature of the three natures of knowable objects; without realizing that, one cannot realize the selflessness of phenomena. Therefore, Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not realize the selflessness of phenomena. In the Ornament for Clear Realization, it says: 'In order to abandon the thought of the object of apprehension, and because the apprehension is not abandoned, the path like the coral of dependence should be known as truly summarized.' This explains that Solitary Realizers realize the lack of inherent existence of what is apprehended. In the Summary of Abhidharma [Compendium of Abhidharma, Abhidharmasamuccaya], it says: 'Solitary Realizers focus on the Hearer's Vinaya Pitaka and practice the Dharma that is in accordance with the Dharma.' But it does not explain the lack of inherent existence of what is apprehended. From the quote, 'What about beings who have abandoned the aspiration for enlightenment?' it is necessary to examine what is the cause of realizing the lack of apprehension, since they do not train their minds even in the Mahayana Pitaka. Therefore, the wise should analyze this. Previously, there was not even a slight doubt, but I realize that this matter is extremely difficult. If Hearers and Solitary Realizers do not focus on the Mahayana Pitaka, then in the Mahayana sutras such as the Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, when this category of Dharma is taught, 'So many monks, without taking, their minds are completely liberated from defilements; so many have obtained the Dharma eye, stainless, without stain, and completely pure in the Dharmas,' thus explaining the meaning of the lack of inherent existence of all Dharmas, then how do Hearers and Solitary Realizers generate clear realization? There are two types of individuals of the Hearer and Solitary Realizer lineages: those whose continuums are not mature and those whose continuums are mature. For the former, merely hearing the Dharma from the teacher does not cause clear realization to arise; first, by taking the scriptures and reciting them, etc., they become fully aware by hearing the Dharma of the scriptures. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
