As it is said. This is how to abandon the extremes of permanence and annihilation in the ultimate sense, while the above is how to abandon permanence and annihilation in general regarding cause and effect. As it is said: 'If karma had inherent existence, there would be no doubt that it would be permanent.' If karma had inherent existence, it would be permanent, but because it does not have inherent existence, it is not permanent; because it does not have inherent existence, it is not produced; because it is not produced, it will not cease, because cessation is preceded by production. The arising of results from karma that does not cease is not contradictory, so the results of karma are not wasted or fall into the extreme of annihilation. As it is said: 'Because karma does not arise, it has no inherent existence; because it does not cease, it will not change at all.' This is how to abandon permanence and annihilation in the relationship of karma and its results. The self, characterized as neither one with nor different from the aggregates, which is imputed by the proponents of inherent existence, is not even established nominally, so it does not fall into the extreme of permanence. And the person (Tibetan: གང་ཟག, meaning: person, individual) imputed in dependence on the aggregates, arising dependently, whose nature is merely a collection of conditions, like a cart and a pot, etc., exists as a part of nominal designation, so it does not fall into the extreme of annihilation. This is how to abandon the extremes of permanence and annihilation with respect to the object of the person. All the meanings of being free from extremes are also realized by all the noble ones of the three vehicles. Thus, as has been said, all four schools of tenets claim that their own view is the Middle Way that abandons permanence and annihilation, but in reality, those who assert entities truly fall into the extremes of permanence and annihilation, because if things have inherent existence, there is no other possibility than being either permanent or impermanent. As it is said in the Root Wisdom: 'If you accept entities, then there will be views of permanence and impermanence, because those entities change into permanence and impermanence.' Therefore, only those noble individuals who follow the non-inverted system of the noble Nāgārjuna (Sanskrit: Nāgārjuna) are truly entering the heart of the Sugatas' single path, the Middle Way free from extremes. I realize this with conviction and depth through the means of correct scripture and reasoning. As it is said in the Entrance to the Middle Way: 'Outside the path of the noble Nāgārjuna, there is no means of pacification. All their conventional truths deviate from the truth, and by deviating from the two truths, liberation cannot be achieved.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus it was said. Regarding the distinctions in the realization of the Three Yanas (Sanskrit: Triyāna, meaning: Three different teachings or paths of practice): Now, those who consider themselves wise, Observe in a confused manner, As if touching tangible objects with their eyes, Elaborating on how the Mahayana (Sanskrit: Mahāyāna, meaning: Great Vehicle or Path) practitioners understand. Clearly elucidating with scripture and reasoning without error. May the merit arising from this, Become the cause for all beings to attain unsurpassed Bodhi (Sanskrit: Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, meaning: unsurpassed perfect enlightenment). This 'Treatise Differentiating the Realizations of the Three Yanas' was written at the behest of the noble benefactor of the precious teachings, Jamyang Namkha Rinchen Gyaltsen Pal Zangpo, by the Shakya (Sanskrit: Śākya, meaning: of the Shakya clan) monk, Zhonnu Lodro, at the auspicious Sakya Monastery. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
