Moreover, it is also translated in the scriptures. There is also a source for the Mahāyāna scriptures. It is also said in the Prajñāpāramitā (Perfection of Wisdom): 'Those who wish to study in the Śrāvakabhūmi (the level of the Hearers) should also study the Prajñāpāramitā. Those who wish to study in the Pratyekabuddhabhūmi (the level of the Solitary Buddhas) should also study the Prajñāpāramitā,' and so on. It is also said in the Ārya Saṃgraha (Noble Collection): 'Those who wish to become Tathāgata (Thus-gone One) Hearers, and those who wish to become Solitary Buddhas and likewise Dharma Kings, cannot attain it without relying on this Kṣānti (Patience). For example, just as one cannot see the opposite shore from this shore.' It is also said in the Ārya Daśabhūmika Sūtra (Noble Ten Levels Sutra): 'O sons of the Victorious Ones, just as a prince born into a royal family, possessing the name of a king, merely by being born, overwhelms all the assemblies of ministers, not by discriminating with the power of his own intellect. When he grows up, due to the power of his own intellect arising, he far surpasses all the actions of the ministers. O sons of the Victorious Ones, as soon as a Bodhisattva (Enlightenment Being) generates Bodhicitta (the Mind of Enlightenment), he overwhelms all the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas with the greatness of his superior intention, not by discriminating with the power of his own intellect. A Bodhisattva abiding in this seventh level, due to abiding in the greatness of knowing his own realm, far surpasses all the actions of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas.' This scripture clearly shows that the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas also realize the Dharmā-niḥsvabhāvatā (lack of inherent existence of phenomena). If it were not so, then a Bodhisattva who has just generated the mind of enlightenment would also overwhelm the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas with the power of intellect, because they do not realize the lack of inherent existence of phenomena, while the Bodhisattva does. Although the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas realize the Dharmā-nairātmya (selflessness of phenomena), they do not completely abandon the Jñeyāvaraṇa (cognitive obscurations), because they have not initially established it extensively through hearing and thinking, and then have not practiced it for a long time through meditation-born wisdom. But it is not that they do not abandon the cognitive obscurations at all, because they have abandoned the clinging to the Skandhas (aggregates), which is the root of the Kleśāvaraṇa (afflictive obscurations). If the Vinaya (discipline) of the Hearers also teaches the selflessness of phenomena, then what is the difference between it and the Mahāyāna (Great Vehicle)? In the Mahāyāna, the selflessness of phenomena is taught extensively, as well as the generation of Bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment), -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -817

Furthermore, it surpasses the Śrāvakayāna (Hearer Vehicle) by demonstrating special methods such as pāramitā (perfections, going to the other shore), aspiration prayers, and complete dedication. As it is said in the Ratnāvalī (Precious Garland): 'The aspiration prayers and conduct of Bodhisattvas, and the complete dedication, are not taught in the Śrāvakayāna. How could one become a Bodhisattva? The meaning of abiding in Bodhisattva conduct is not taught in the Sūtras, but only in the Mahāyāna. Therefore, the wise should uphold it.' Therefore, the wisdom that realizes the absence of inherent existence of phenomena, if separated from the method of great compassion, leads to the enlightenment of Hearers or Solitary Realizers. If it is grasped by great compassion, it leads to the unsurpassed great enlightenment. Therefore, the wisdom that realizes the absence of inherent existence of phenomena is the single path traversed by all the noble individuals of the three vehicles. The difference between the Great and Small Vehicles lies in whether or not they are grasped by methods such as the generation of bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment). All Buddhas are also not different as Madhyamikas (Middle Way practitioners) because they realize the profound Middle Way of dependent origination, which is free from all extremes. As it is said in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning: 'Having completely transcended existence and non-existence, not abiding in either, they meditate on the profound, aimless meaning of conditions.' And, 'Those who possess the nature of being free from contention have no bias. For those who have no bias, where is there another side?' If Hearers and Solitary Realizers are not Madhyamikas, they would fall into either extreme of permanence or annihilation, which is not reasonable. Because they would not have realized the suchness of dependent origination. And if they realize the suchness of dependent origination, it is contradictory to say that they have not realized the suchness of the Middle Way. Because the meaning of dependent origination itself is the Middle Way. As it is said in the Seventy Stanzas on Emptiness: 'To the Buddha who unequaledly taught that emptiness and dependent origination have the same meaning as the Middle Way, I pay homage.' And in the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā (Fundamental Verses on the Middle Way): 'That which arises dependently on something, is neither the same as that (cause), nor different from that (cause). Therefore, it is neither permanent nor annihilated.' And, 'Dependent origination is explained as emptiness; it is a designation based on dependence; it is the Middle Way.' Furthermore, in the Mūlamadhyamakakārikā: 'The Buddhas destroy the continuum of the world,' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
