Thereafter, by relying on the four types of reasoning, one properly and thoroughly analyzes the meaning of what has been heard, thereby generating the wisdom arising from contemplation. Following that, by familiarizing oneself with the meaning that has been contemplated through the means of the two-fold union, one generates the wisdom arising from meditation, which directly realizes the true meaning as it is, and attains liberation. Such a person focuses solely on the Hearer Vehicle's (Śrāvakayāna) collection of texts, engaging in hearing and so forth. Therefore, in this regard, the object of practice for the Hearers and Solitary Realizers (Pratyekabuddhas) is said to be the Hearer Vehicle's collection of texts. Those whose continuums are ripened, having familiarized themselves with hearing, contemplation, and meditation in other lifetimes, their continuums are extremely ripened. Therefore, in this life, merely by hearing the teachings that reveal the suchness of the Dharma to others, they generate realization and attain liberation. Among them, some attain liberation by hearing teachings that reveal the absence of inherent existence (niḥsvabhāvatā), while others attain liberation by hearing teachings that reveal the Four Noble Truths (catvāri āryasatyāni), impermanence (anitya), and so on. Therefore, when the Blessed One (Bhagavan) taught the Sutras of the Great and Small Vehicles, many monks are said to have attained liberation. If Hearers generate realization from teachings that reveal all phenomena as lacking inherent existence, it would contradict their lack of realization of the absence of self of phenomena (dharma-nairātmya). Answer: The intention of the Sutras that teach the absence of inherent existence is twofold: the absence of inherent existence of the self of persons (pudgala-nairātmya) and the absence of inherent existence of phenomena. The former refers to the aggregates (skandha) such as form (rūpa), which arise dependent on other conditions and not from their own nature; they are momentary and do not abide in their own nature; and they do not exist in the way that childish beings grasp them as the self, sentient beings, and so on. The latter refers to: the imputed (parikalpita) is merely an imputation, therefore it lacks inherent existence; the dependent (paratantra) arises dependent on other conditions, therefore it has no inherent arising; the thoroughly established (pariniṣpanna) is the nature of emptiness (śūnyatā), therefore it is ultimately without inherent existence. The *Compendium of Abhidharma* (Abhidharma-samuccaya) states: 'From the extremely vast, all phenomena are without inherent existence.' What is the intention? It is because they do not arise from their own nature, they do not have their own entity, they do not abide in their own nature, and they are without characteristics as grasped by childish beings. Furthermore, in the nature of the imputed, there is the absence of characteristic inherent existence; in the dependent, there is the absence of inherent arising; in the thoroughly established, there is the ultimate absence of inherent existence.

Thus it is said. For those of the Śrāvaka lineage whose minds are mature, because they have previously become accustomed to merely the absence of a self of person, when the teaching of all dharmas as being without inherent existence is given, they first realize the absence of inherent existence. Because of their weak intellect and because they have not become accustomed to it, they do not realize the second one (absence of inherent existence of phenomena). Therefore, from the teachings on the absence of inherent existence, it is not contradictory that realization arises for the Śrāvakas. Thus, Asaṅga and his retinue, who follow the teachings of Maitreya, do not accept that Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the absence of inherent existence of phenomena. The reasons for this are those that I have stated above, which are thorough and without error. The system of the noble Nāgārjuna and his spiritual sons Those who follow Nāgārjuna and his spiritual sons, such as Śāntarakṣita, Kamalaśīla, and their disciples, appear to hold that Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas do not realize the absence of inherent existence of phenomena. However, these teachers have not understood Nāgārjuna's intention as it is, but have explained it according to the treatises of the glorious Candrakīrti, which is not the intention of the noble one. Therefore, in the system of the noble Nāgārjuna, there is no difference in the realization of the three noble ones (Śrāvakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Bodhisattvas) in meditative equipoise, because all of them realize that all dharmas are without inherent existence. As it is said in the Praise of the Transcendental (Catuhstava): 'Without realizing the signless, you have said there is no liberation.' 'The path to liberation that is necessarily followed by the Śrāvakas, the Pratyekabuddhas, and the Buddhas is only you; there is certainly no other.' That Śrāvakas and Pratyekabuddhas realize the absence of inherent existence of phenomena should be understood through reasoning and scripture. The reasoning is that if they do not realize that the aggregates are without inherent existence, then they will not have abandoned the basis for being mistaken about a self. As it is said in the scripture: 'Whatever śramaṇas or brahmins who truly observe a self or what belongs to a self, they only observe these aggregates of appropriation.' Therefore, the aggregates themselves are the basis for the delusion of a self. Therefore, if there is manifest clinging to the aggregates, then the clinging to a self will naturally arise, which will cause karma and afflictions to arise, and therefore they will not be liberated from saṃsāra. As it is said in the Precious Garland (Ratnávalī): 'As long as there is clinging to the aggregates, there will be clinging to a self. From clinging to a self comes karma, and from karma comes birth.' If clinging to a self does not arise merely from clinging to the aggregates... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
