Very well. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if a Bodhisattva were to say, "I will accomplish the Buddha-fields," I would say that this statement is not true. Why is that? Subhuti, what is called "Buddha-fields, Buddha-fields" is actually spoken of by the Tathagata as "non-fields," therefore it is called "Buddha-fields." Subhuti, therefore, a Bodhisattva-Mahasattva should generate the mind without abiding in anything. That is, he should generate the mind without abiding in anything whatsoever. He should generate the mind without abiding in form. He should generate the mind without abiding in sound, smell, taste, touch, or dharma. Subhuti, it is like a person whose body becomes so large, like Mount Sumeru, the king of mountains. Subhuti, what do you think? Is that body considered large? Subhuti replied: Blessed One, that body is large. Sugata, that body is large. Why is that? Because the Tathagata has said that that body is non-substantial, therefore it is said that that body is large. Because that body is non-substantial, therefore it is called a body. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? If there were as many grains of sand in the Ganges River as there are Ganges Rivers, would the sand in those Ganges Rivers be numerous? Subhuti replied: Blessed One, the Ganges Rivers themselves are numerous, let alone the sand in those Ganges Rivers. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, you should believe, you should understand. If there were as many worlds as there are grains of sand in those Ganges Rivers, and if a man or woman were to fill those worlds with the seven precious things and give them as alms to the Tathagatas, Arhats, Perfectly Enlightened Buddhas, Subhuti, what do you think? Would that man or woman generate much merit from that basis? Subhuti replied: Blessed One, they would generate much merit. Sugata, they would generate much merit. That man or woman would generate much merit from that basis.

The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, if someone were to fill as many worlds as there are with the seven precious things and give them as alms to the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the Perfectly Awakened Buddhas, it would not equal the merit of someone who, from this Dharma discourse, would grasp even a four-line verse and thoroughly explain and reveal it to others. That merit would be far greater, immeasurable, and incalculable. Furthermore, Subhuti, in any place where even a four-line verse from this Dharma discourse is recited or taught, that place becomes a stupa for the world, including gods, humans, and asuras. What need is there to mention someone who takes, writes, upholds, cherishes, reads, masters, and properly contemplates this Dharma discourse? That is truly the most wondrous of wonders. In that place, the Teacher or a venerable elder like the Teacher resides." Having spoken thus, the Venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: "Blessed One, what is the name of this Dharma discourse? How should we uphold it?" Having asked this, the Blessed One said to the Venerable Subhuti: "Subhuti, this Dharma discourse is called the Perfection of Wisdom. Uphold it as such. Why is that? Subhuti, the Perfection of Wisdom that the Tathagata has spoken of is not the Perfection of Wisdom. Therefore, it is called the Perfection of Wisdom. Subhuti, what do you think? Does the Tathagata have any Dharma to teach?" Subhuti replied: "Blessed One, the Tathagata has no Dharma to teach." The Blessed One said: "Subhuti, what do you think? Are the motes of dust in a three-thousand great thousand world system many?" Subhuti replied: "Blessed One, those motes of dust are many. Sugata, those motes of dust are many. Why is that? Blessed One, those motes of dust, the Tathagata has said are not motes of dust.

Therefore, because the Tathagata spoke in this way, it is called 'dust of the earth.' Whatever world there is, because the Tathagata spoke of it as not being a world, it is called 'world.' The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? Should the Tathagata, the Arhat, the perfectly complete Buddha, be regarded by means of the thirty-two marks of a great being? Subhuti replied: Blessed One, that is not so. Why? Because the thirty-two marks of a great being that the Tathagata has spoken of are spoken of by the Tathagata as not being marks. Therefore, they are called the thirty-two marks of a great being. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if any man or woman were to give away as many bodies as there are grains of sand in the Ganges River, it would be surpassed by someone who, taking only a four-line verse from this teaching, were to perfectly explain it to others. That one would generate far more merit, immeasurable and incalculable, than that former basis. Then the Venerable Subhuti, moved by the power of the Dharma, shed tears. Having wiped away his tears, he said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, this teaching spoken by the Tathagata is truly wonderful! Sugata, it is truly wonderful! Blessed One, since I have gained wisdom, I have never heard such a teaching before. Why is that? Blessed One, those beings who will generate a true understanding of this exposition of the Sutra will be endowed with the greatest wonder. Why is that? Blessed One, that which is a true understanding, the Tathagata has said is not understanding. Therefore, the Tathagata has spoken of it as true understanding. Blessed One, it is not a wonder to me that I can comprehend and believe in this teaching. Blessed One, in the future, in the last five hundred years of the degenerate age, if any beings take up this teaching, write it, hold it, recite it,
