Then, Subhuti, a Bodhisattva should not be attached to the Dharma, nor should he be attached to what is not Dharma. Therefore, the Tathagata, understanding this, said that those who know the categories of Dharma as being like a raft should abandon even the Dharmas, how much more so what is not Dharma? Furthermore, the Blessed One said to the venerable Subhuti: Subhuti, what do you think? Does the Tathagata think that there is any Dharma by which he has awakened to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment? Does the Tathagata think that he has taught any Dharma? After he had spoken thus, the venerable Subhuti said to the Blessed One: Blessed One, as I understand the meaning of what the Blessed One has said, there is no Dharma by which the Tathagata has awakened to the unsurpassed, perfect, and complete enlightenment. There is no Dharma that the Tathagata has taught. Why is that? Because the Dharma that the Tathagata has awakened to or taught is neither graspable nor expressible. It is neither Dharma nor not Dharma. Why is that? Because noble beings are distinguished by the unconditioned. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, what do you think? If a son or daughter of good family were to fill this three-thousand-great-thousand world system with the seven precious things and give them as a gift, would that son or daughter of good family generate a great heap of merit from that basis? Subhuti replied: Blessed One, much. Well-Gone One, much. The Blessed One said: That son or daughter of good family would generate a great heap of merit from that basis. Why is that? Because that heap of merit is itself not a heap. Therefore, the Tathagata speaks of a heap of merit, a heap of merit. The Blessed One said: Subhuti, if a son or daughter of good family

If someone were to give as a gift this entire universe, the great trichiliocosm, filled to the brim with the seven precious things, it would not compare to someone who, from this teaching, even grasps a four-line verse and explains and correctly demonstrates it to others. From that, they would generate an immeasurably greater mass of merit, countless and incalculable. Why is that? Because, Subhuti, the unsurpassed, perfect, complete enlightenment of the Tathagatas, the Arhats, the Samyaksambuddhas, arises from this. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, are also born from this. Why is that? Subhuti, what is called the Dharmas of the Buddhas, the Dharmas of the Buddhas, is because the Tathagata has spoken of those things that are not the Dharmas of the Buddhas; therefore, they are called the Dharmas of the Buddhas. Subhuti, what do you think? Does a Stream-enterer think, 'I have attained the fruit of Stream-entry?' Subhuti replied, 'No, Bhagavat.' Why is that? Bhagavat, because he has not entered into anything; therefore, he is called a Stream-enterer. He has not entered into form, he has not entered into sound, he has not entered into smell, he has not entered into taste, he has not entered into touch, and he has not entered into Dharmas; therefore, he is called a Stream-enterer. Why is that? Bhagavat, if a Stream-enterer were to think, 'I have attained the fruit of Stream-entry,' he would be clinging to self, clinging to sentient beings, clinging to life, and clinging to person. The Bhagavat said, 'Subhuti, what do you think? Does a Once-returner think, 'I have attained the fruit of Once-returning?' Subhuti replied, 'No, Bhagavat.' Why is that? Because there is no Dharma whatsoever that he has entered into as a Once-returner; therefore, he is called a Once-returner. Bhagavat, if a Once-returner were to think, 'I have attained the fruit of Once-returning'

If one were to think like that, one would be attached to self. One would be attached to sentient beings, attached to life, and attached to person. The Blessed One said, 'Subhuti, what do you think? Does a non-returner think, "I have attained the fruit of non-returning"?' Subhuti replied, 'Blessed One, no. Why is that? Because there is no dharma whatsoever by which one enters the state of non-returning; therefore, it is called non-returning.' The Blessed One said, 'Subhuti, what do you think? Does an Arhat think, "I have attained Arhatship"?' Subhuti replied, 'Blessed One, no. Why is that? Because there is no dharma whatsoever that is called an Arhat.' Blessed One, if an Arhat were to think, "I have attained Arhatship," he would be attached to self. He would be attached to sentient beings, attached to life, and attached to person. Blessed One, the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, has declared me to be the foremost among those who dwell in peace. Blessed One, although I am a desire-free Arhat, Blessed One, I do not think, "I am an Arhat." Blessed One, if I were to think, "I have attained Arhatship," the Tathagata would not say that the son of good family, Subhuti, is the foremost among those who dwell in peace, because he does not abide in anything; therefore, he is called one who dwells in peace.' The Blessed One said, 'Subhuti, what do you think? Is there any dharma that the Tathagata obtained from the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, Dipamkara Buddha?' Subhuti replied, 'Blessed One, no. There is no dharma whatsoever that the Tathagata obtained from the Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, Dipamkara Buddha.'
