It is said that there is originally no liberation and delusion, and no ignorance in the essence. When the manifestation of the compassion and awareness of the union appears in the object, if one recognizes that it is one's own appearance, it becomes the basis for liberation; if one does not recognize it, it becomes the basis for delusion. Therefore, it is said that one must know how to place both delusion and liberation there. The essence of the ground, primordial purity, awareness, and emptiness transcends causes and conditions. If one does not understand, although the cause of awareness has no material cause or transmitted cause, because one does not recognize the true nature of the manifestation of the ground, the previous conceptual thought becomes the cause of generating the subsequent conceptual thought, and therefore it is also called the transmitted cause. Obscurations are adventitious. If one does not distinguish between the ground and the manifestation of the ground, the seven grounds are regarded as flawed. First, if one believes that the essence of the ground is primordial purity, one will fall into nihilistic emptiness, and not a single sentient being will be liberated. Second, if one believes that the ground is spontaneously present, one will cling to a single wisdom, and therefore one will not be able to escape the delusion of samsara in the three realms, thus falling into the view of permanence. Third, if one believes that the ground is uncertain, then that ground will be the basis for liberation at the time of liberation, and the basis for delusion at the time of delusion, just like a sentient being who can become a Buddha, the path of yoga that is practiced becomes meaningless. Fourth, if one believes that certainty is the real basis of meaning, one will believe that it is unconditioned, permanent, and unchanging, thus completely abandoning all appearances. Fifth, if one believes that the ground can be transformed into anything, it will be transformed into samsara by the cause of delusion, and transformed into Buddhahood by the cause of transcendence. For example, the ground needs to be like the keel of a ship. Sixth, if one believes that the ground can be affirmed in any way, it is like affirming that the ground exists, affirming that the ground does not exist, or affirming both existence and non-existence. Seventh, if one believes that the ground is diverse, it is like believing that all the various phenomena that appear as samsara and nirvana are the ground. To determine these seven grounds, one must determine them from the perspective that the essence of the ground, primordial purity, and the manifestation of the ground, spontaneous presence, are originally inseparable and in union. In short, the ground, path, and fruit of Dzogchen are called the three containers of the spontaneously present body. First, the precious container of the spontaneously present ground, whose essence is originally emptiness, free from elaboration, the unobstructed radiance of self-manifestation, the awareness of the three kayas of union of awareness and emptiness without separation, the radiance in which both samsara and nirvana can appear, for example,

Just as the Rana jewel naturally manifests five lights, this is called the "vein of the ground." Regarding the part where the appearance of the ground from the ground is not understood, it must be understood as ignorance, along with its cause, seed, and habitual tendencies. It is said that beyond that, there is absolutely no ignorance with its cause and seed. Once the view of awareness-emptiness is realized, the cause and seed can be uprooted. In that ground-space, the appearances of samsara and nirvana are possible. Because the ground-space is all-pervasive, if the Great Perfection of the Ground does not have the potential to manifest, then the pure and impure appearances that arise from the function of the ground-appearance would have the fault of being like a result arising from no cause. If the part where the ground-appearance manifests is recognized as self-appearance, then it becomes the basis for liberation; if it is not recognized, it becomes the basis for delusion. This part that can manifest is called the "general ground." The vein of the Ground-Appearance Path, Spontaneously Accomplished Jewel, is: the appearance of the ground from the ground has four ways of manifesting: the way of manifesting of the Ground, Spontaneously Accomplished Jewel; the way of manifesting of the Great Ground-Appearance; the way of manifesting of the Sambhogakaya; and the way of manifesting of the Nirmanakaya. When these three, sound, light, and rays, manifest, in the first instant, recognize that it is the mandala of self-appearing wisdom. One needs the instruction like making the unclear clear, like a maiden looking at a mirror. In the second instant, be certain that self-appearance has no self-nature; one needs the instruction like an unchanging golden stake. In the third instant, know that the knower is clear on the ground; one needs the instruction like shooting an arrow that cannot be turned back. Thus, by distinguishing through six characteristics, one is liberated in the primordial ground of original purity. If the ground-appearance itself is not recognized as self-appearance, then there is one, the illusion of delusion; two, the appearance of delusion; and three, the distinction between appearance and mind. Because of the power of the three causes and four conditions, the aggregates, elements, and sense bases of samsara appear, therefore, this appearance of delusion and liberation, purity and impurity, is called the vein of the Ground-Appearance Path. Because the situation of the Ground-Appearance Path is the pinnacle of the eight vehicles, therefore, all phenomena of appearance and existence are perfected in the great mandala of self-appearing wisdom, so it is the Great Perfection of the Path. Without this vein of the Ground-Appearance Path, there would be no samsara and nirvana, no liberation and delusion, no Buddha and sentient beings.
