Notes on the classification of ground, path, and fruition, etc. Notes on the classification of ground, path, and fruition, etc. This system of Secret Mantra Vajrayana has three aspects: ground, path, and fruition. Among them, it is said that one must recognize the essence, rely on the path, and manifest the fruition. The ground, the Tathagatagarbha, exists like oil pervading the continuum of sentient beings in the three realms. As stated in the Sutra tradition, the Victorious Shakyamuni and, as stated in the Tantra tradition, the Dharmakaya Vajradhara, are of the same essence, but in appearance, the Sutra tradition is taught by manifesting as the form of the Victorious Shakyamuni, and the Tantra tradition is taught by manifesting as the form of Vajradhara. The compassionate teacher accumulated merit and purified obscurations for countless three great kalpas. When he finally attained complete and perfect enlightenment, the ground of that Buddha did not become better. For example, even when the sun is not obscured by clouds, the essence and rays of the sun do not become better. The demoness of the Marungpa charnel ground eats the flesh of sentient beings as food, drinks the blood of sentient beings as drink, and commits sins such as killing the lives of sentient beings. Therefore, the ground of that demon did not become worse, just as the sun does not become worse even when obscured by clouds. So, are there no differences between sentient beings and Buddhas? No, Buddhas are free from the obscurations of the three habitual tendencies, like the sun without any clouds. Sentient beings are obscured by the three habitual tendencies, so one must understand the difference, like the sun being obscured by clouds. The self-arisen, primordial, original ground, the unconditioned clear light, is permanent because it is free from birth, aging, dwelling, and decay. Good Buddhas cannot transform it, and evil sentient beings cannot change it. Because there is no gathering of causes and conditions, it is unconditioned. Conditioned phenomena arise from the collection of causes and conditions, and all phenomena of things are impermanent, even for a moment or two. Regarding the classification of names for the ground, the Great Perfection school calls it the self-arisen, primordial, original ground, the Great Seal school calls it the innate coemergent wisdom, the common Tantra school calls it the ground-basis of the nature-ground, and as stated in the Sutra tradition, it is called the ground Tathagatagarbha. First, introduce this ground to intelligent individuals, then practice it through meditation on the path, abandon it through conduct, and manifest the fruition. This ground.
