Therefore, establishing that very point is primarily about establishing the self of the individual. The source, the three realms of existence, primarily establishes the self of phenomena. Furthermore, regarding the method of identifying the root of samsara, the thief: In this place of the three realms of samsara, from the beginningless and endless expanse until now, we have been wandering. Samsara is endless, and the delusion of sentient beings is also endless. Just as when the Blessed One was asked by Ananda, he replied that there was no end, similarly, if considered from the perspective of time, there is no beginning or end. Then, examine who is involuntarily driving and leading oneself. Among body, speech, and mind, who is wandering? Examine what the root of samsara is. According to the Mahayana tradition, it is held to exist in all three realms. The desire realm is the coarse body of flesh and blood. The form realm is the luminous body of meditative concentration. The formless realm is the body of mental consciousness in meditative absorption. The dream state is the body of habitual imprints. In the bardo, it is the mental body. Furthermore, which of these three is the most important? From where did it initially come? From here, where does it go in the future? Examine that. Moreover, the body and speech have been abandoned and taken countless times. Because the continuum of mind has not ceased, the agent of the three realms is the mind. In the common tradition of sutra and tantra, the root of samsara is the clinging to the self of the individual. Specifically, the way to establish the beginning and end of samsara and nirvana from the perspective of the individual's own nature is as follows: When sentient beings die, the previous wind and mind have already been withdrawn. In the interval before the subsequent wind and mind have arisen, the clear light of the dharmakaya of the death bardo appears, but because it is not recognized, it becomes non-referential. That time of the natural state when the clear light is appearing is called the primordial ground. That is when one's own nature is not recognized by oneself. It does not arise as the body of the teacher of the three kayas. Because the power of wisdom and qualities has not increased, it is not a Buddha. The impure wind and mind have not arisen. Based on that, the appearance of karmic and afflictive habitual imprints has not increased, so it is not a sentient being. Therefore, that primordial ground where neither Buddha nor sentient being has arisen is it. From that, when the wind of the ground luminosity, awareness, energy, and wisdom moves, if one recognizes one's own nature, distinguishing it through six characteristics, like the primordial protector, the unchanging light, becoming a Buddha, it is the beginning of nirvana. The way to establish the beginning of samsara is that when the subtle karmic wind encounters an object, when sentient beings encounter the conditions of previous karma, the body and speech suddenly arise... Thus, the body
