Concise Notes on "The নিশ্চিত Lamp of Definitive Understanding" Concise Notes on "The নিশ্চিত Lamp of Definitive Understanding" Noble Lama Rinpoche, know that in order to correctly seek the path of liberation, for all the dharmas of the ground, path, and fruition, arise definitive understanding that is free from the shell of doubt through the stainless means of scripture and reason. Or rather, may the precious lamp of definitive understanding, drawn forth by the two valid cognitions that discern the meaning of the two truths, abide. For any individual who seeks to realize this profound scripture and reason, their mind is deep and vast, and doubt arises in places that are difficult to understand. Through the valid cognition that individually distinguishes the two truths, for the ground—the union of appearance and emptiness, the path—skillful means and wisdom, and the fruition—the dharmas of the union of the two kayas, may unwavering conviction, drawn forth by oneself through the path of scripture and reason, arise straightforwardly in one's own mindstream. Marvelous! The two, the venerable Dharmakirti and the glorious Chandrakirti, with the light of their well-spoken teachings on the vast path of valid cognition and the profound path of Madhyamaka, together with the teaching of the Sugata, have caused the vast and open path that clearly reveals the suchness of the two truths to dawn. By focusing one's mind solely on the realms of the conventional and ultimate, they have completely destroyed the dense darkness of doubt. The term "sage" refers to omniscience. Even if words such as "suddenly arising," "general," or "inferior" are added, in essence, it refers to the wisdom that arises in omniscience. All these answers to the questions that were asked are established by scripture and reason. Now, if one extends the rope of listening, contemplating, and debating for a long time with the results of speech, then even if one drinks from a well, one will not satisfy the ocean. Therefore, it is spoken as such. The Gelug view of "non-affirming negation" means that the Gelugpas consider the ultimate view of the Prasangika Madhyamaka to be "non-affirming negation." Other schools consider it to be "non-negation." The Nyingma own system is that when determining the basis—all the aggregates, elements, and sense bases—they consider it to be self-empty and non-affirming negation. The main point is the primordial nature that transcends mind, free from the two negations. An example is the equipoise of the noble ones. If there is no negation and affirmation on the path, one cannot distinguish between the acceptance and rejection of good and bad, and the differences of leisure and endowment, so it is the ultimate view. The glorious Sakyapas say that conventional valid cognition is not established; if valid cognition is established, then reality would be established.

The Gelugpas believe that a pillar that can serve the purpose of support has the characteristics of a pillar. Because it cannot be destroyed, the basis of emptiness is not empty. If there is no basis of emptiness, it is to slander conventional truth, thereby destroying the Sugata's teachings from the root. Therefore, from the perspective of reasoning, the basis of emptiness is not empty, but empty by ultimate truth. The aggregates are not empty by their own nature, but empty by ultimate truth. Luminosity is not empty by its own nature, but empty by ultimate truth. They add this explanation. They say that the object to be refuted is only ultimate truth. The Nyingma view is that there is not a single dharma, from form to omniscience, that is not empty by its own nature. It is not something empty like the aggregates being empty by ultimate truth, but from the beginning of profound emptiness, the appearance of the basis, path, and result of pure and impure cannot not exist. Therefore, if there is appearance, there is emptiness together, and if there is no appearance, there is no emptiness together. Appearance and emptiness are inseparable. Emptiness is the self-characteristic of dependent arising, the nature of phenomena. In general, one must first determine one's own system, thereby gaining unwavering faith that cannot be stolen by anyone. One must also distinguish the faults and merits of other systems. The reason for saying that the basis of emptiness is not empty is that nowadays most people do not distinguish between conventional truth and reasoning, and think that all phenomena are non-existent, are empty. They think that both samsara and nirvana do not exist, which is their basis of emptiness not existing. That is their view. The necessity of doing so is that if the ultimate truth of the aggregates is refuted, then self-grasping will be refuted, thereby leading to annihilation. Therefore, for persons and phenomena, one must practice pure appearance without bias, as taught by the Buddha and the Buddha's sons, thereby blending heart and mind. In short, all ways of establishing are included in 'is' and 'exists'. All ways of refuting are included in 'is not' and 'does not exist'. So, what is meant by 'not empty'? When asked this question, they say that the nature of the basis of emptiness is not empty, the basis of emptiness is not empty, but empty by ultimate truth. Since the basis of emptiness is not empty, is ultimate truth on the neck of the basis of emptiness? If the basis of emptiness is not empty, then ultimate truth does not exist in the knowable, so its emptiness of emptiness is like non-existence, and it is not profound emptiness. If the basis of emptiness is not empty, even if the appearance of being empty by ultimate truth arises, it is other, therefore, ultimate truth and conventional truth, or appearance and emptiness, are incompatible. For example, seeing a horse,
