It is accepted as the latter. Furthermore, as it is said: Abandoning the basis is like a poisonous tree in a commoner's garden. The path of taming is like that seen by a skilled physician. Transforming is like a secret mantra practitioner, a Brahmin who has accomplished mantra. Subjugating the inner being is like a peacock seeing food. The Dzogchen practitioner who abides in his own place is like the earth that supports the great elements. Thus, for example, if a poisonous tree grows in the enclosure of the king's edible trees, some foolish subjects become attached to the sweet taste of the poisonous tree, abandon the edible trees, and enjoy the poisonous tree, suffering from illness and having no chance to live. Similarly, abandoning the ten virtues and indulging in the five poisons in one's own mind cuts off the life of liberation. Among those subjects, some know the advantages and disadvantages of poisonous and edible trees and use the edible trees, but they cannot transcend the poisonous trees. Similarly, some who awaken to white deeds believe that good results are heaven and bad results are bad destinies, so they abandon the ten non-virtues and practice the ten virtues, but they cannot necessarily escape from samsara. This is the vehicle of gods and humans. It is said that the results of actions and deeds are not wasted. Again, some subjects say, "This trunk of the poisonous tree should be uprooted and thrown far away." Similarly, although one is liberated from samsara by realizing the many aggregates and moments, the Theravada vehicle, which holds the momentary mind that grasps the object as truly existent, is a means of abandoning afflictions. Again, some subjects say, "There is no need to uproot the poisonous tree. Pour boiling alkaline water on the cut, and it will not grow again." Similarly, although one realizes that what is grasped has no self-nature, the Pratyekabuddha vehicle, which holds the momentary awareness that grasps as truly existent, is a means of stopping afflictions. Again, among those subjects, a doctor says, "It is foolish to uproot the poisonous tree and cut down the trunk. This is a rare source of medicinal oil." Thus, by preparing medicine from the poisonous tree, it can cure diseases and become the best of flavors. Realizing the two selflessnesses in the ultimate sense and attaining liberation is the means of training afflictions and conceptual thoughts into Dharmata in the Bodhisattva vehicle. Again, of the subjects

Thereupon, a mantra practitioner emerged, questioning the necessity of such extensive medicinal taming for subduing a poisonous tree. Merely through the recitation of mantras, something superior even to the previous medicinal oil arose. Similarly, through the miraculous power of mantras, mudras, and samadhi, by transforming afflictions and conceptual thoughts into the nature of deities, the fruits of virtuous and non-virtuous actions do not adhere. This is the vehicle of the three sections of Kriya Yoga, the method of transforming afflictions and conceptual thoughts into deities and wisdom. Furthermore, when a peacock encounters the trunk of a poisonous tree, it rejoices greatly and consumes it, resulting in flourishing youth and beautiful, radiant feathers. Likewise, even when engaging with afflictions, one is not bound, and because the five wisdoms are clear, one is not tainted. This is the vehicle of the two Inner Tantras, the method of subduing afflictions. Just as in the garden's soil, whether poison grows, is cut, is tamed with medicine, is transformed by mantras, or is eaten by peacocks, there is no concept of liking or disliking, and even if poison does not grow, there is no rejection or acceptance. Similarly, the nature of the Dharmadhatu is naturally pure, and self-originated wisdom arises spontaneously, unblemished by actions and their results. This is the vehicle of Ati's own system, transcending the terminology of abandonment and adoption, the ultimate realization of the Sixth Teacher's intention. The four causes for Bodhisattvas taking rebirth: The rebirths of Bodhisattvas abiding on the ground of adhimukti-carya (practice through aspiration) mostly arise from the cause of karma. Because they have not gained control over their minds, they are not necessarily born where they think and pray to be. Although sometimes they are born according to their wishes, they are mainly born in places where the karma of accumulating merit will benefit themselves and others. Bodhisattvas who have entered the first and second bhumis are born according to their prayers, wherever they benefit sentient beings in the realms of gods, humans, animals, pretas, or hells. For example, in times of great famine, they take the bodies of fish and elephants to satisfy sentient beings with their flesh. In times of intermediate kalpas of disease, they take the bodies of beings who can cure diseases, accomplished vidyadharas, and great doctors to pacify various diseases.
