There are four ways in which compassion arises. As the scripture says: 'Constantly, inherently, by force arising, through objects and supplication it arises.' This means: the way compassion arises constantly and perpetually; the way compassion arises through inherent force; the way compassion arises upon encountering an object; and the way compassion arises through urging and supplication. The first, the way compassion arises constantly and perpetually, also has four aspects. That is, the continuous stream of inherent compassion is: the essence of the Sugata, without interruption, the nature of all dharmas, the inexhaustible activity, which constantly arises for the benefit of beings. The continuous stream of arising compassion is: the power of the elements in general, each with its own capacity to benefit beings. This refers to the arising in the constant cycle. The continuous stream of emanation compassion is: as stated in the Guhyagarbha Tantra, in each of the infinite and boundless three thousand great thousand worlds of the six realms and ten directions, each Great Sage, Bhagavan, performs the benefit of the five types of beings through the four means of taming. The continuous stream of wisdom-eye compassion is: with the wisdom eye of omniscience, compassion is continuous as long as the realm of samsara is seen, without beginning or end. The second, the way compassion arises through inherent force, is: self-arisen great wisdom is the essence of compassion, the nature of wisdom that dispels the darkness of ignorance. For example, like the light of the sun shining in the world without effort, just by its own nature. The third, the way compassion arises upon encountering an object, is: like Rudra, the object of compassion, and also encountering those who suffer, causing the heart of the omniscient one to be moved. Thus, the suffering of sentient beings in the three realms is continuous, and the arising of compassion is said to be continuous. The fourth, the way compassion arises through urging and supplication, has two aspects: urging and supplication for one's own benefit, which is the arising of compassion when a suffering being cries out in anguish, like the lament of Rudra in the past. Urging for the benefit of others is: in the third chapter, the five noble families urge and supplicate. In the fifth chapter, the promise to relieve suffering. And so on, and...

Trulku Rinpoche said: The continuous compassion is like the flow of a river; the compassion of inherent power is like the rays of the sun; the compassion of urging and praying is like begging from a generous person; the compassion of encountering an object is like a mother's love for a child possessed by a demon.
