That is, the connection of the apprehended with empowerment, the connection of empowerment with practice, and the connection of practice with the fruit, is the connection. The fruit, having become enlightened in the three mandalas, and spontaneously accomplishing the body and wisdom, is the object to be expressed. The words that show this, such as the introduction and the beginning, are the expresser. Emanating manifestations for the sake of sentient beings is the need. Accomplishing the two benefits of beings from that is the ultimate need. These arising in dependence on each other is the establishment of the connection of compassion and wisdom. ༈. Moreover, merely showing what can appear as sound is self-illuminating in the expanse of the six realms. Just as the Victorious Ones of the five families and others are made to enter into the heart. The teacher who shows the Secret Lord and others as appearing to others, makes them appear to others through the door of appearing as sound. Like the wise and skillful and others, having made it into a collection of symbolic letters, transmitted it in sequence. Even now, the original form of the letters exists as a symbolic form, etc. From this, in the mind of the speaker, the sound that expresses the meaning of the object to be expressed, from the general appearance, is spoken in the manner of appearing as sound, and it appears in the same way in the mind of the listener. This is the miraculousness of the speech of the Thus-Gone One, the miraculousness of the wheel of letters, wonderful! From the point of view of terminology, letters show meaning by relying on the eight places where letters enter, namely: sound, language, name, sign, symbol, term, word, and meaning. Among these, sound generally has distinctions such as understood and not understood. Here, the understood sound shows sentient beings and prophesies. Language is the language of each place, such as Sanskrit. In general, it is said that the languages of the border regions outside the central region are all dialects, etc. But in particular, the Tibetan language, the sound is pure, the language is beautiful, and it is similar to Sanskrit. It is praised by the wise. Name is, according to the Abhidharma system, the nature of the collection of letters. According to the grammatical system, a word is what has a case ending, and a name is what does not have a case ending. However, such a thing does not occur in Tibetan, the sound that merely shows the essence of the thing, such as the names of things like pillar and vase, and the superior letters, etc. A sign is the aspect by which the name signifies and is able to manifest that thing. For example, saying "vase" signifies the shape of a bulging belly.

Like time, for example. Convention refers to the connection between a name and the object it names, possessing the general characteristics of sound and meaning. For instance, when the word "fire" is spoken, both minds conjure up the general meaning of heat and burning, and based on that, acceptance and rejection occur in relation to objects with their own characteristics. Terminology refers to the fact that objects themselves do not have terminology, and it is deliberately established for the purpose of acceptance and rejection. For example, when a piece of wood supporting a beam is called a pillar and pointed out, the thought "This is a pillar" is an established cognition; then, saying "pillar" again as a sound is speech; and from this, starting to perform actions such as supporting the beam is action. Therefore, the basis for the arising of knowing, speaking, and acting is the cognition obtained from convention. A sentence, according to the Abhidharma tradition, is the combination of names expressing a distinction in meaning, such as "All conditioned things are impermanent." Meaning refers to the way things exist as they are. Therefore, the way these eight—sound, language, etc.—employ letters is through the power of a mind that grasps sound and meaning together. And for that mind to arise, it must possess five characteristics that distinguish it from other cognitions at the time of convention. That is, because it focuses on meaning, it generates the power of general meaning; because it originates from sound, it generates the image of general sound; it generates attachment to both similar appearances and common designations, and it is able to make others understand; because of manifest attachment, it is able to connect names and the objects they name. For example, when seeing a piece of wood supporting a beam, one thinks, "What is this called?" When hearing the sound "pillar," one thinks, "What is this the name of?" At that time, when someone informs of the convention, a cognition connecting the name and the object named arises. When it becomes manifest, later, manifest attachment arises to things that resemble it. From this, one can understand the manifest attachment that allows sound and meaning to be mixed. For those who are not familiar with treatises, they grasp the form that shows letters as the letters themselves, and they also cling to the image of sound and treat what is written in books as the object of expression. For speakers and listeners who are proficient in convention, the way in which the cognition that allows sound and meaning to be mixed arises is that when the speaker utters that sound, they properly mix the five characteristics of the previous time of convention, therefore
