Like the statement, "Those who are extremely afflicted by disturbing emotions will attain supreme enlightenment." Also, in the Collection of Inspired Utterances, it says, "One should kill one's father and mother, as well as the two kings who are virtuous, and destroy all the land with its surroundings; that person becomes pure." All such instances are called 'flexible intention' (bsgyur ba ldem dgongs). Among the four intentions, speaking with the intention of equality, the Teacher said, "At that time, I became the Buddha Vipashyin." Speaking with another intention, "All phenomena are without inherent existence," and "without form, without feeling," etc., these statements are not merely nominal but are intended to be understood in the ultimate sense. Speaking with another time in mind, it is said that merely holding the name of any Buddha will lead to rebirth in that Buddha's field. This does not necessarily mean immediate rebirth after this life, but it refers to the certainty of being born at some time. Speaking with the intention of the individual's thought, for those who think that giving alone is sufficient, disparaging giving and praising moral discipline is an example of this. However, in reality, moral discipline is indeed superior to giving. Necessity is that each has its own meaning. Among the eight intentions: 1. To avoid contempt arising from regarding Buddhas as superior or inferior, as mentioned above, "I became the Buddha Vipashyin." 2. To avoid contempt for the Dharma, Brahmins distinguish castes, believing that Brahmins and Kshatriyas, etc., of higher castes can purify Shudras, etc., of lower castes, while the Buddha's Dharma can be practiced even by Shudras of low caste, and is therefore easy to obtain. To counter this contempt, it is said that if one makes offerings to Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, one will then understand the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, meaning that if one does not accumulate such merit, it is difficult to realize, thereby avoiding the contempt of thinking the Dharma is easy to obtain. 3. For the sake of those who are lazy, thinking they cannot learn the path, it is said that if one makes aspirations to be born in Sukhavati, one will be born there. Similarly, merely holding the name of the Tathagata Immaculate Moon will lead to the attainment of unsurpassed enlightenment. And, as it is said that merely reciting a certain dharani will purify the karma of the five heinous crimes, etc., like this, even lazy people can make such aspirations.
