Once, a child untied a pearl necklace worth a hundred thousand from his neck and offered it. The second child also imitated him, untying their own pearl necklaces from their necks and offering them. One of the children asked, "What do you two wish for with this generosity?" One of the children said, "May I become like the foremost in wisdom who dwells on the right side of the Bhagavan." The second said, "May I become like the foremost in miraculous powers on the left side." That one middle child prayed to be like the Buddha Bhagavan. At that time, the Tathagata declared, "This middle child comes with such a thought, and with every step he takes, he will receive the merit of a hundred thousand Chakravartin kings, a hundred thousand Indras and Brahmas, and the merit of seeing a hundred thousand Buddhas." At that time, the pearl discarded with the mind of a Shravaka came to rest on the two shoulders of the Buddha. The pearl necklace discarded by one child with the mind of omniscience formed various beautiful pearl palaces on the crown of the Buddha's head, and the Buddha's form appeared within them. The Tathagata smiled and prophesied, "When this child becomes a Buddha, the other two children will become that Buddha's supreme pair of attendants." They are now the Bhagavan himself, Shariputra, and Maudgalyayana." Thus he spoke. The Tathagata declared that these were the first instances of generating the thought of enlightenment. In other sutras, there are many instances of repeatedly generating the thought of enlightenment in the presence of many Buddhas. These initial thoughts of enlightenment are as stated in the Ornament of the Sutras: The coarse, arising from convention, is the relative thought of enlightenment, and the subtle, obtained through the nature of reality, is the ultimate thought of enlightenment. The former is the cause of birth, the power of friends, the power of causes, the root power, the power of hearing, arising from habituation to virtue, unstable and stable. The generation of stable thought by others is explained. As it is said, generating the thought of enlightenment in the presence of the invincible banner of the Tathagata is the power of friends.

Born from karma, namely, the Bodhisattva Manjushri transformed into a Dharma speaker named Yeshe Gyalpo (King of Wisdom), who skillfully induced him to generate Bodhicitta in the presence of the Tathagata. Thus, he made aspirations and accumulated merit. Furthermore, as a boy, upon seeing the Tathagata named Sarvabhijina (All-Conquering), he offered a pearl necklace and prayed to become like that Buddha. Also, when pulling the chariot of hell, compassion and loving-kindness arose spontaneously for his friend, which was due to the power of his lineage. Among the three boys, the one who aspired to become a Buddha, being devoted to the vast, was the Bhagavan (Lord) himself. Those who aspired to become the supreme pair were Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. The arising of compassion for a friend is also as stated in the Sutra Ornament: "Its root is said to be compassion, always thinking of benefiting sentient beings." As such, the root of Bodhicitta lies in the arising of compassion and loving-kindness for sentient beings, which is due to the awakening of the Mahayana lineage. King Odantaka (Radiant Light) made aspirations for unsurpassed Bodhi, relying on the power of hearing. The tamer said, "I have tamed the elephant's body, but I cannot tame the mind's afflictions. The one who tames the mind is the Buddha Bhagavan." Having heard the praise of the Buddha, the king made offerings and so on, and aspired to become a Buddha. The potter Yangpai O (Vast Light) offered alms to the Tathagata Shakyamuni and prayed to become like that Buddha, which was due to the power of the root of virtue. Due to the power of accumulating merit in the past, he encountered the Buddha's appearance in the world, accumulated collections, and made aspirations. The Brahmin Samudrarajas (Ocean of Dust) made five hundred aspirations and generated the mind, which was due to the great familiarity with the virtues encompassed by the Mahayana Dharma in this and previous lives. Therefore, with great compassion surpassing other Bodhisattvas, he initially generated the mind to embrace the impure and degenerate realms.
