Even if rain as thick as a continuous thread or as thick as a chariot axle were to fall, the heat of hell would dry it up in the sky. Shariputra filled the hell with water through meditative concentration. Maudgalyayana said to Devadatta, "Come here!" and Devadatta came and touched his feet. When Maudgalyayana asked about his suffering, Devadatta said, "On top of the general suffering of Avici hell, there is the striking of burning iron mountains, the cutting by thirty-two knives, the hammering of my head into powder, and the grinding by elephants coming from four directions as if grinding rice flour." He said that these were because he threw stones at the Buddha, caused division in the Sangha, killed the nun Utpalavarna, and slandered the protector of wealth. Later, he was prophesied to become a Pratyekabuddha, so he said, "Then, until then, I must endure all the sufferings of Avici hell." The place where the Dharma was primarily taught is Vulture Peak Mountain. Why is it called Vulture Peak Mountain? Because the southeast of that mountain has a shape like a vulture, with a wide expanse of water. It is called "Peak" because it has three peaks: the peak of medicine and flowers, the water with qualities, and the wind with qualities. The first is that there are various medicines and various flowers. The second is that there is water that is moderately cold and hot, possessing eight excellent qualities, and beneficial for all diseases. The third is that there are three refreshing breezes: a breeze that makes the body comfortable, a breeze that balances diseases, and a breeze that sharpens the mind. The first is that it has the fragrance of medicine, and because the area has a balance of hot and cold, it makes the body comfortable. The second is that it has a breeze that can cool those with feverish diseases and generate warmth for those with cold diseases, so the hot and cold of diseases do not increase, but the elements are balanced. The third is that all the Dharma spoken by the Bhagavan on those mountains was heard by the retinue, all that was heard was remembered, all that was remembered was not forgotten, and all that was not forgotten arose in the mind. Once, a thief was caught, etc. In Sakya Pandita's "Clear Differentiation," it says: Once, an old and ignorant fool, a female benefactor believed in him, offered him a sewn cloth, and asked him to teach the Dharma. But he could not find anything to teach, and became discouraged, repeatedly saying, "I don't know, I am suffering."

Because the benefactor did not understand the cause, he realized that the result is suffering, and saw the truth. Then, the teacher praised him, saying, "(You) have been liberated from the ocean of suffering of samsara." At that time, a thief thought: I will steal cloth from this fool, and followed him. Later, the old man entered a house. The thief chanted: Give me cloth! The old man was so afraid that he could not come out, so he chanted from the window of the house: Take it! When the thief took it with one hand, the old man said: When I was a benefactor before, I gave with both hands. You also take it with both hands! So, both of them stretched out their hands, and (the old man) tied (the thief's hands) with a rope and tied him to the pillar. After that, the old man came out and shouted: Imitate taking refuge! Every time he took refuge in the Three Jewels, he hit him with a stick. After that, the thief was released. The thief limped to a river. A guest asked: Why are you limping? (The thief) said: Although I am a thief, a practitioner is more powerful than me, he combined refuge and sticks to beat me. The Buddha has supernatural powers and reduced refuge to three times. If there is a fourth refuge, I will definitely be eaten by ghosts and lose my life. Saying this, he developed faith in the Buddha, went under a bridge, and entered the water. At that time, countless non-humans began to cross the bridge, but could not pass. They thought: We used to be able to pass easily, why is this? (They) asked that person: What do you know? (That person said:) I know taking refuge in the Three Jewels. (They said:) I don't know anything else. Those ghosts also developed a definite understanding of taking refuge, and after death, they were reborn as gods, that is the rumor. It is also said that the thief also developed faith in the Buddha and became a monk. Even the image of the Buddha is painted on the wall, as long as it is seen by the eyes of inferior beings such as animals, or the special Dharani mantras and the names of the Buddhas are heard in the ears once, or a moment of pure mind arises towards the Three Jewels, reciting a sentence of refuge, or joining one palm, or scattering a flower in the air, until this point, they will not regress from the fruit of liberation, this is confirmed by the sutras, tantras, and treatises.
