In the events such as Ajatashatru killing his father, Devadatta said to Ajatashatru, "I have already appointed you as king, you should also appoint me as Buddha." The king felt that the teacher had golden color and wheels, etc., which you would not like, so he summoned a goldsmith and smeared his body with oil cake called "Panju." He melted gold and applied it to his body, causing him physical pain. Similarly, the blacksmith burned the wheel and hit Devadatta, who also felt the pain of heat. After that, Devadatta, together with Ajatashatru, began to plot to kill Gautama. He gave the catapult maker a pearl necklace worth a thousand gold coins and hired a thousand people. He placed the catapult directly opposite where the teacher was residing on Vulture Peak Mountain, with two hundred and fifty people on each side of the road. If they could not kill Gautama with the catapult, they were to kill him wherever he appeared. So the five hundred catapult operators asked, "Where is this to be thrown?" They heard that it was to be thrown at Gautama. The five hundred people and the maker all thought, "It is better to die than that," and fled. The teacher used his miraculous power to transform the bad road into a staircase, allowing them to escape. These people came before the teacher, heard the Dharma, and saw the truth. Devadatta went to check again and saw those people listening to the Dharma there with the teacher. The five hundred people also went elsewhere. Devadatta himself pulled the catapult and threw a huge stone. Vajrapani struck the catapult stone with a vajra, and the stone shattered. When a large fragment was about to fall, it was supposed to be caught by the Yaksha Kumbhira, but he was struck by the stone powder and died immediately, reborn as a deva, came before the teacher, heard the Dharma, and saw the truth. A small fragment of the stone hit the teacher's foot, causing the Buddha's body to bleed. To diagnose the illness, Jivaka the youth (the doctor Jivaka the youth was the son of King Bimbisara and the wife of a merchant. The king kept it secret from the merchant and entrusted others to raise him. Jivaka the youth had a jewel that could see all things, and when placed on someone's head, it could see all the diseases of the body. - Translator's note) went to the Buddha and looked for a medicine that would be beneficial for this.

Even if it is said, "There is but cannot be found," it is because the sandalwood is a sacred place, and it is with a merchant. It was offered to the teacher, thinking that if it was effective, Ajatasatru would kill me, but even if killed, I would endure it. After offering it in this way, the teacher accepted it and prophesied that the merchant would become the Sandalwood Buddha. Even now, the bodily impurity has not ceased. It is said that "the milk of a woman who has her first child is effective." A woman with little milk, who cannot even satisfy her own child, heard that if she offered milk, her own child would die and she herself would be punished by the king, but she still offered it. Therefore, she was prophesied to become the Milk-Giving Buddha, and it was shown that the bodily impurity has not ceased even now. Light Protector and the Ten Powers requested the truth, and the teacher granted it. As soon as the verse was spoken, the bodily impurity ceased. In this way, the teacher's bodily impurity was taken out, a mad elephant was released, the Sangha was divided, and an Arhat woman was killed, etc., committing the deeds of immediate retribution. Fearing the karmic consequences of the future, he went to the six heretical teachers to inquire. Those teachers proclaimed the evil view that there is no past or future life and no cause and effect of karma. Devadatta believed them and severed the roots of virtue. Later, the Shakyas urged Devadatta to ask the teacher for forgiveness. Devadatta filled his fingernails with a contact poison called "calf's navel," thinking: "It would be good if Gautama forgave me. If he does not forgive me, I will smear the poison on his feet." He came before the teacher and asked for forgiveness. The teacher knew this and transformed the kneecap of his foot into crystal. He pretended to bow to the teacher's feet and scratched with his fingernails. The fingernails broke, and the poison fell to the ground. He felt ashamed. He said, "Those of you who have taken refuge in the Buddha will not fall into the lower realms." He said, "I have taken refuge in you. If I fall into the lower realms, it is a lie." Then, forgetting his habit, he went back. A little flame of hell emerged from the ground and touched his foot. He shouted "ཚའོ་ཚའོ་(Tibetan, No corresponding Sanskrit, No corresponding Romanization, No corresponding literal Chinese meaning)", the earth split open, and his body fell into it. The flames of Avici hell burned his body very painfully. He cried and called out to Ananda, saying, "I take refuge in the Buddha from the depths of my bones." His body fell into hell and stayed in Avici hell for one great kalpa. Because he said, "I take refuge from the depths of my bones," it was prophesied that in the future he would become a Pratyekabuddha named Bone. Shariputra and Maudgalyayana went to observe the conditions of hell.
