A figure appeared, displaying thirty-seven unattractive aspects such as crookedness, and said: Though renowned as wise, in truth, utterly ignorant. Though widely learned, has not found the secret of certainty. Though vastly knowledgeable, has not realized a single point. Why should such a person not be scorned by all? And so on. The supreme meaning, inseparable from word and meaning, only my brother knows. So she said. Naropa said: Please let me meet your brother, and I too shall seek to understand the meaning. She replied: I do not need to show him, but if you pray and go forth, you will surely find my brother. Having shown a beautiful form, she vanished. Naropa thought that such a young and beautiful form, displaying thirty-seven unattractive aspects, was indicating that samsara possesses thirty-seven faults. Even hearing, thinking, teaching, and practicing that are not separate from the eight worldly concerns (gain and loss, destruction and fame, praise and blame, suffering and happiness) do not transcend the nature of samsara. Therefore, I must seek a guru who can show the meaning. Thinking thus, he spoke of the faults of samsara: Samsara is the senses perceiving the faults of others, samsara is a pit of fire, devoid of patience. And so on, he spoke of the thirty-seven faults of samsara. Then, thinking, how shall I seek the supreme guru? A sound arose from the sky: In reality, the nature is without separation, but in conventional reality, through various interdependent connections, rely on the wheel of supreme bliss, seek and find the guru Buddha. Then, he went to the great charnel ground of Nagara and recited the seven-syllable mantra three hundred thousand times, and a sound arose in the sky: Joyful in knowledge, born of noble lineage, from here to the east, the guru Buddha you desire, named Tilopa, go! As prophesied, he went east, and on a very narrow path in a rocky gorge, he met a very wretched leper woman, and feeling disgusted, he covered his nose and went around the edge of her garment. She immediately disappeared, and a sound arose in the sky: Bound tightly by the chains of conceptual thought, how will you find the guru? Clean and unclean, only one extreme, merely designated by children. So it was said. It was an emanation of the guru.
