Virtuous deeds bring about a complete assembly. Among these, there are instances where a single propelling karma propels multiple rebirths. For example, the venerable Maudgalyayana said, 'In the past, when I was a bundle of grass, I offered a handful of alms to a Pratyekabuddha. Through the maturation of that single virtuous deed, I was born as a god in the Trayastrimsa heaven seven times, and as a Chakravartin king seven times, and even now I am born as a wealthy Shakya.' There are also instances where multiple karmas propel a single body, such as Devadatta, whose karma accumulated over many lifetimes caused him to be born as a monk but become an evildoer. There are also instances where a single karma propels only one rebirth, such as a woman who gives rise to compassion for her son being born in the Brahma realm. Whether these are virtuous or non-virtuous deeds, they are accomplished through the continuous activity of factors such as the field, intention, and diligence, and according to the strength of the cause. The propeller is karma, and the propelled is the person. The propelled result or propulsion is the Vipaka (result of maturation) that is of the same essence as the propelled. The propelling karmas are distinct, because they are the life force and non-life force formations of the lower realms. Differentiating based on the speed of maturation of the Vipaka, there is the karma that is experienced in the present life (Drsta-dharma-vedaniya karma), which is a powerful karma done in this life that matures in this very life, such as Devadatta attempting to poison the Bhagavan with his fingernails, resulting in the fire of hell arising immediately. An example of a virtuous result is Vajra, the daughter of King Prasenajit. There is the karma that is experienced after birth (Upapadya-vedaniya karma), which is the karma of the five heinous crimes and the near-five heinous crimes, where the Vipaka is experienced immediately after being born in the next life. There is the karma that is experienced at other times (Apara-paryaya-vedaniya karma), which is the karma where the Vipaka is experienced from three lifetimes onwards up to a hundred thousand lifetimes. There is the karma that is not certain to be experienced (Aniyata-vedaniya karma), which is the karma that has been accumulated but is not certain to produce a Vipaka because it has been destroyed by its respective antidotes, etc. These are the four types that are taught. Differentiating based on whether it has been done and whether it has been accumulated, taking white karma as an example: Karma that has been done and accumulated is like offering to the Three Jewels with faith. Karma that has not been done but has been accumulated is like rejoicing in the virtuous deeds of others. Karma that has been done but not accumulated is like reciting mantras with a distracted mind. Karma that has not been done and not accumulated is

Since a neutral state of mind cannot produce a fully ripened result, it is unpredetermined, i.e., the four possibilities. Regarding black karma, karma that is done and accumulated is: 1) doing it intentionally with a strong motivation; 2) the actual action is completed; 3) there is no regret afterwards; 4) rejoicing; 5) there is no antidote to destroy it; 6) it has the power to definitely ripen its result, possessing these six conditions. Karma that is done but not accumulated is: because the above six conditions are not complete, even if karma is done, it is not certain that the result will ripen as it is. The other two can be understood from the opposite of the above. That is, whether it is good or bad, all those who participate with an equal mind receive the same result as a single actor, such as in war. As it says in the Abhidharmakosha: "For a single purpose, such as in war, all possess it as if they were the actor." Whether it is good or bad, if one rejoices afterwards, one obtains merit like the actor; if one regrets afterwards, it is said that both good and bad are exhausted; if one is skilled in means, even great sins can be quickly purified; even small roots of virtue, can increase immeasurably, and so on. Thus, the karma that accomplishes birth in samsara arises first from the power of afflictions. Ultimately, if it is not nourished by afflictions such as craving, it will not produce the fruit of birth. Therefore, afflictions are like water where nagas dwell, like the roots from which trees grow, like the seeds that cause sprouts to grow, like the trees that produce fiery fruits, they are the factors that produce samsara. The cause of samsara, the truth of origination, is the two, karma and afflictions; the result of samsara, the truth of suffering, is the two, the outer world and the inner beings. Differentiating by the magnitude of karma: In general, although one is propelled by the result to be abandoned, since it can be transformed by the antidote, the karma of the antidote is greater. Differentiating from the perspective of how it appears: The karma of common appearance transformation is: from the accumulated karma of common appearance, the appearance of the outer world, such as the beings of that realm appearing in the same direction. The karma of uncommon experience transformation is: the place, body, and resources accomplished by the karma appearance of each sentient being are different, experiencing pleasure and pain, and so on. Similar kind not...
