Leave no trace behind, and don't cut off any escape routes. If you must remember, contemplate the ups and downs, gatherings and separations. The only thing you can rely on is the Dharma, O Mani reciter! Outward calculations and preparations are like dried-up ants and fishing nets. Don't let desires fall upon your mind; abandon craving. If you must remember, contemplate the uncertainty of when death will come. Don't waste time on meaningless actions, O Mani reciter! Immediate actions are like dreams and hailstones. Effort is futile; let it go. Even when eating food that accords with the Dharma, receive it without attachment. Actions are without essence, O Mani reciter! This training in taming the thoughts of the three times in the post-meditation period is unavoidable until all appearances of memory arise as Dharmakaya; remember it when needed. Don't let deluded thoughts run wild, O Mani reciter! As stated above, if you do not tame your mind with these pith instructions, you will enter suffering due to attachment to the five objects of desire. The eye consciousness is attached to form, causing the moth to die in the flame; the ear consciousness is attached to sound, causing the deer to be killed by the hunter; the nose consciousness is attached to smell, causing the bee to be trapped in the flower; the tongue consciousness is attached to taste, causing the fish to be caught by the hook; the body consciousness is attached to touch, causing the elephant to sink into the mud. As the Song of Dohakosha says: Fish and moths, elephants and bees, Here, look at them as you would wild animals. Vasubandhu says: Even seeing the great assembly of blazing fires, Those with great attachment to form, The moth will enter the fire. Eating the pure sprouts of grass, Able to run very far, The hunter, with the song, Will surely strive to kill the deer. The bee always flies in the sky, Its form is very pleasing, But due to the fault of attachment to smell, It will surely die. The fish travels on unobstructed paths, And always wanders and plays, But due to attachment to tasting flavors, The fish is destroyed by the hook. Competing with the guardians of the earth, Always knowing the king of mountains, Due to the close touch of the cow, The elephant will surely be killed. Therefore, abandon attachment to the five objects of desire, and diligently engage in listening, contemplating, and meditating to obtain immeasurable benefits. The Omniscient Dharma King said: Listening dispels the darkness of ignorance, contemplation realizes the meaning of reality, and meditation
