Concentrate and listen to the Dharma! As it says in the Padma Kathang: The sun stays in a place where the light is weak, the eyes focus on the face of the speaker, the ears listen to the teachings without distraction, and the mind focuses on the words and contemplates their meaning. Also, as it says in the tantras: The eyes look at the face of the lama, the ears listen to the lama's teachings, the mind ascertains the meaning of the words, and doubts are asked about when they arise. Therefore, one should listen without mental wandering, without idle chatter, sitting upright, with hands folded and with a smile. The great omniscient one said: Prostrate, sit upright, fold your hands, and listen with undistracted reverence. As it says in the Sutra Requested by the Noble Inexhaustible Intelligence: Eighty-four aspects of hearing, such as desire and thought, are taught. The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury also says: Possessing eighty-four aspects of hearing, listen with joy and reverence. Furthermore, there is also a way to listen through possessing thirty-six qualities. Again, it says in the same text: Six precious things, such as the perception of jewels; six difficult practices, such as enduring afflictions; six unchanging things due to circumstances, such as extensive hearing and diligence; six things to do intentionally, such as generating compassion; six kinds of necessities, such as knowing distinctions; and six kinds of seeking, such as seeking the Dharma; listen with thirty-six qualities. The benefits of listening in this way are immeasurable. The great omniscient one said: Even beings who hear the sound of the Dharma drum are liberated from the lower realms, what need is there to mention listening to the Dharma! The Ganti Sutra says: To indicate the time for teaching the sacred Dharma, the sound of beating a drum or ganti, hearing it will lead to the attainment of enlightenment, what need is there to mention coming to listen to the Dharma! Previously, when Master Vasubandhu was memorizing nine hundred and ninety thousand treatises, he recited many scriptures day and night. There was a pigeon under the bed in his room that always heard the sound of the Dharma. When it died, it was reborn as the son of a king in a border region. As soon as he was born, he said: Where is my lama? When asked who your lama is, he said: Vasubandhu. So he inquired of the merchants traveling to the central region.

It was asked, "Does the lama of the monastery reside in the central region?" They replied, "Yes, he does." Then, that boy, desiring to go, was taken there. When he arrived in the presence of Vasubandhu (དབྱིག་གཉེན།), he called him "Lama." The venerable one said, "I do not recall being your lama." He remembered his previous life and spoke. The venerable one accepted him and had him read, and he became a scholar named Lodro Tenpa (བློ་གྲོས་བརྟན་པ།), skilled in the three baskets. Furthermore, when the Bhagavan was teaching the Dharma in a blue grove, about five hundred geese were flying in the sky, and upon hearing the sound of the Buddha teaching the Dharma, they desired to land there and did so. However, the bird hunters caught all the geese and killed them. All of them took rebirth in the Trayastrimsa heaven as five hundred sons of gods. Moreover, in the rafters of a monk's dwelling, there was a nest where a wren slept, and when the monk recited the Arya Samadhiraja Sutra (འཕགས་པ་སྡུད་པ།) at dawn, the wren heard it. Sometimes, when half of the sutra was recited, dawn broke, and sometimes when two-thirds were recited, dawn broke, and then it would fly away. Just by hearing the sound of the Arya Samadhiraja Sutra, the obscurations of that wren were thinned, and immediately after the bird died, it obtained a human body. It had faith in the Three Jewels and became ordained. He knew that just hearing the previous Arya Samadhiraja Sutra required a teacher. Thus, just by animals hearing the sound of the Dharma, there is such benefit. Since we have become human beings, as it is said, "To be able to speak and understand is the characteristic of a human being," to be suitable vessels for teaching and listening, and to be able to practice, is extremely fortunate. Therefore, one must strive in hearing and contemplation. Sakya Pandita said, "Because one did not learn in a previous life, one is seen as foolish in this life. To avoid being born foolish in the next life, one must strive to listen in this life, even if it is difficult." Thus, contemplating the benefits, at any time of hearing, contemplating, or meditating, do not follow after past habits, do not welcome future afflictions, and do not let the present six consciousnesses fall into external conditions, it is very important to keep the mind's tightening and loosening moderate.
