One should generate the thought of guarding livestock like a shepherd. Towards the virtuous friend, one should generate the thought of being like a skilled physician. Again, son of lineage, you should generate the thought of yourself being like a guest. Towards the Dharma, one should generate the thought of giving fearlessness. Towards diligent practice, one should generate the thought of being liberated from all fears. Towards the virtuous friend, one should generate the thought of being like a valiant escort. Again, son of lineage, you should generate the thought of yourself being like a boatman. Towards the Dharma, one should generate the thought of being like a boat. Towards diligent practice, one should generate the thought of crossing to the other shore of the water. Towards the virtuous friend, one should generate the thought of being like a skilled listener. Thus it is said. In the "Homage," it says: "Although I explain the supremely excellent Dharma, If you hear it but do not truly practice it, It is like a sick person holding a bag of medicine, Unable to cure his own illness." One should understand it as it is said. Secondly, the method of teaching and listening through the six perfections. First, the teacher, the master, explains through the six perfections: In the "Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury," it says: "Explaining the meaning of words well is the giving of Dharma, Without afflictions is the perfection of discipline, Enduring weariness is diligence with joy, Without distraction is meditation, distinguishing is wisdom." Thus, explaining the meaning of the Dharma well is giving, Explaining without mixing with afflictions is discipline, Enduring weariness, hunger, thirst, and the wrongdoings of the retinue is patience, Not being weary and being joyful in explaining is diligence, Explaining without the mind wandering elsewhere is meditation, Distinguishing Dharma from non-Dharma or realizing the absence of inherent existence is wisdom. In "Klong gsal," it says: "Explain by unraveling the vajra words, Explain by combining the confused tantras, Explain by stretching out the contracted teachings." Thus, the vajra words are unraveled with the intention of the meaning lineage, the confused tantras are combined as if stringing pearls on a thread, the contracted teachings are straightened out like stretching out a snake's knot, and the hidden instructions are revealed and explained like the sun dispelling darkness, it is said. Furthermore, when explaining the Dharma, with a mind aroused by afflictions,

One should avoid faults such as being unmelodious, having incorrect meanings, unclear words, being excessive or deficient, having contradictory earlier and later vows, disparaging others, being mixed with bad local slang, and being unsuitable for the disciples' minds. One should strive for excellence in the use of words, clarity of expression that pervades all retinues, pleasantness to the ear that makes everyone eager to listen, definiteness of meaning that cuts through doubts, expertise in similes and meanings that pleases the listeners and makes understanding easy, suitability for the disciples' minds that makes it meaningful, derivation from the framework of scripture and reasoning that ensures no errors, ease of understanding and memorization, and skillful use of methods such as telling wonderful stories at appropriate times to prevent listeners from becoming bored. The benefits of teaching the Dharma in such a way are threefold: it becomes the best way to make offerings to the Buddhas, the best way to give to sentient beings, and it increases merit and leads to the attainment of clairvoyance. As for being the best way to make offerings, the sutra says: 'Whoever teaches my Dharma properly for the benefit of others is making offerings; offering flowers, perfumes, and lamps to the Victorious Ones is not the true offering.' As for being the best way to give, the Maitreya Lion's Roar Sutra says: 'If someone were to fill Buddha-fields as numerous as the sands of the Ganges with the seven precious substances and offer them to the Buddhas with a joyful mind, and someone else were to give a single verse to one sentient being, that gift of a verse, accomplished with compassion, would be superior to that vast gift of precious substances, beyond comparison, let alone two or three verses!' As for increasing merit and attaining immeasurable clairvoyance, the Compendium of Trainings says: 'The gift of Dharma is free from material attachment and is the cause of increasing merit.' The sutra also says: 'Shariputra, if a householder were to fill the earth with seven precious substances as numerous as the sands of the Ganges and offer them to the Tathagatas, it would not compare to the merit of a renunciant who teaches a single four-line verse, for the latter accumulates far more merit.' The Lion's Roar Asked Sutra says: 'The gift of Dharma brings remembrance of past lives.' The Sutra Requested by the Dragon King Ocean says:
