Secondly, the six stains are: Vasubandhu said in the Abhidharmakosha, "Pride and disbelief, lack of interest and external distraction, internal absorption and weariness, these are the stains of listening to the Dharma." Thus, even towards the Dharma-teaching lama, one should not have pride, thinking oneself superior to the lama; one should abandon wrong views of disbelief in the Dharma and the lama; one should not lack interest in hearing and contemplating the Dharma; one's mind should not be distracted by external objects; one should not withdraw the five senses; one should not become weary due to the length of the Dharma session, etc. Furthermore, one should listen to the Dharma after abandoning the thirty-six faults, including the six activities of demons. As it is said in the Wish-Fulfilling Treasury: "Disrespect and so on are the six activities of demons, pride and so on are the six activities of obscuration, pretending to be virtuous and so on are the six activities of abandoning the Dharma, attachment to material gain and so on are the six faults of distraction, attachment to gain and honor and so on are the six faults of wrong views, acting differently and so on are the six Dharma practices of straying onto the wrong path. Abandon the thirty-six faults and listen to the Dharma." Thirdly, the five non-grasps are: grasping the words without grasping the meaning; grasping the meaning without grasping the words; grasping without understanding the meaning; grasping by reversing the order; and grasping with wrong views. Having abandoned such behaviors to be abandoned, one should hold in mind the words and meanings of the Dharma one has heard in an inseparable manner. In general, neither the Indian nor the Tibetan scholars and siddhas have ever said that one can know without learning or accomplish without practicing. The noble Nagarjuna said, "If one becomes all-knowing without learning, how can cause and effect be true?" Our own teacher also told the stories of King Bilinggali, who, on the path of learning, had a thousand iron nails hammered into his body in order to hear a single four-line verse of the Dharma; of King Kanashinasali, who lit a thousand lamps on his body in order to hear a single four-line verse of the Dharma; of the ascetic Itala, who, in order to hear the Dharma, peeled off the skin of his body to make paper, used his bones as a pen, and used his blood as ink to write verses; and of the regent Damagam, who, in order to hear the Dharma, jumped into a pit of fire ten cubits deep.

Just as one would jump into a pit of burning coals, one seeks the Dharma through hundreds and thousands of austerities. As it is said, "Even crossing the edge of flames and razors, one seeks the sacred Dharma until the very end." Therefore, the Buddhas and their sons must engage in such diligent asceticism in order to seek learning. What need is there to mention ourselves? Therefore, in this initial stage, the wisdom that arises from learning is crucial, for without learning, one cannot contemplate or meditate. Nagarjuna says, "Without relying on conventional terms, one cannot realize the ultimate meaning. If one does not realize the ultimate meaning, one cannot attain nirvana." Shantideva says, "One with little learning is like a blind person, not knowing the method of meditation. Without that, what will he contemplate?" Learning is the lamp that dispels the darkness of ignorance, the supreme treasure that thieves and others cannot steal, the weapon that destroys the enemy of universal delusion, the supreme friend who shows the methods and instructions. Possessing learning, there will be no contradictions, and one will be well-established on the path of the three baskets. Sakya Pandita says, "If one does not train one's mind in the objects of knowledge, then omniscience is as distant as the end of the sky. Thinking thus, the Buddhas and their sons have well said that one should train in all objects of knowledge." Furthermore, considering dull faculties, old age, and short lifespan, it is not appropriate to be discouraged, thinking that one cannot engage in learning, contemplation, and meditation, or that even if one can, there is no time. As it is said, "Even if one is to die tomorrow, one should learn. Even if one does not become wise in this life, in future lives it is like taking back one's own wealth." Having generated certainty about this, one should seek learning. Secondly, the practices to be adopted include the four recognitions, the six perfections, and the teachings on other conduct, in three parts. First, the four recognitions are: The Omniscient One said, "The lama is like a doctor, the instructions are like medicine, and oneself is like a patient; one should maintain these four recognitions. Diligent effort is the method of taking medicine, and peaceful bliss is like obtaining the fruit of liberation from illness." Furthermore, in the Sutra of the Tree Arrangement, it says, "Son of good family, you should generate the recognition of yourself as a patient. You should generate the recognition of the Dharma as medicine. You should generate the recognition of diligent practice as approaching
