If the mind is free from hesitation, all wishes will be fulfilled. Second, the distinction of motivation is: Fearing and dreading the suffering of the three lower realms, and seeking refuge merely to attain the happiness of gods and humans in higher realms, this is the refuge of a lesser person. Knowing that all high and low states of samsara are suffering, and seeking to liberate oneself from all the suffering of samsara, seeking only the state of peaceful nirvana, and taking refuge in the Three Jewels, this is the refuge of a middling person. Taking refuge in order to establish all sentient beings dwelling in the ocean of suffering of the three realms of samsara in the state of complete and perfect Buddhahood, this is the refuge of a great person. As stated in the "Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment": "Inferior, middling, and supreme, know that there are three kinds of persons. Among them, whoever, by whatever means, seeks only the happiness of samsara for himself, know that person to be the lowest. Turning his back on worldly happiness, and by nature turning away from sinful actions, whoever seeks only his own peace, is called a middling person. Whoever, through the suffering of understanding his own continuum, wishes to completely eliminate the suffering of others, and desires to lead them to liberation, that person is the supreme." Thus it is said. Third, in taking refuge, there is identifying the object of refuge and visualizing the field of merit. First, identifying the object of refuge, there are four: outer, inner, secret, and most secret. First, the outer Three Jewels are: the Buddha who possesses the four bodies and five wisdoms; the sacred Dharma that possesses scripture and realization; and the noble Sangha of bodhisattvas abiding on the bhumis. Furthermore, the definition of Buddha is: the essence is primordially empty, pure from the beginning, and all adventitious deluded thoughts have ceased; compassion and wisdom are impartially vast, and skillful in the means of various emanations to tame beings. There are also three types of Dharma: the Dharma of teaching, the Dharma of realization, and the Dharma of peace and nirvana. In short, the essence is utterly pure, the characteristic of its nature is to grasp emptiness, and its divisions are twofold, cause and effect, or the three pitakas, or the nine vehicles. There are also three types of Sangha: the Sangha of Shravakas, the Sangha of Pratyekabuddhas.

Furthermore, the Sangha of Bodhisattvas is also said to be of three kinds. In brief, in terms of meaning, the essence is devoid of non-virtue, the definition is aspiring to virtue, and the divisions are the Sangha of external images and symbols, the Sangha of altruistic intention, and the Sangha of true meaning. As the scriptures say: The Buddha is the teacher, the Dharma is the path, and the Sangha is the companion, in this way one takes refuge. Taking refuge in the manner of a teacher and a companion is the refuge of cause, and practicing the path now, hoping that the Three Jewels will arise in one's own mindstream in the future is the refuge of result. Secondly, the inner Three Jewels are the Lama, Yidam, and Dakini. Among them, the Lama is the qualified virtuous friend who is skilled in the methods of liberating one's own mindstream and taming the mindstreams of others. In particular, the captain who now rescues us from the ocean of suffering in samsara and leads us to the peaceful and blissful island of liberation, the root Lama and his lineage. Furthermore, the second Buddha, Guru Padmasambhava, who has exhausted faults and perfected qualities, is the source of all blessings. The Yidam is the immeasurable peaceful and wrathful deities, practicing the Eight Great Herukas of Kagyü. Furthermore, all the deities of the six tantra classes, and especially the general glory of all samsara and nirvana, the wrathful Lord Hayagriva, is the single treasury of all accomplishments. The Dakini is all the Dakinis of the three places, and especially Vajravarahi, the mother who gives birth to all Buddhas, is the sole master of all activities. Thirdly, the secret Three Jewels are the Dharmakaya, Sambhogakaya, and Nirmanakaya. The Dharmakaya Samantabhadra is surrounded by the retinue of the ocean of wisdom, and is the father who gives birth to all Sugatas. The Sambhogakaya, the five Buddha families, father and mother, are surrounded by the retinue of Bodhisattvas and Bodhisattva mothers, and are the actual deities possessing the five wisdoms. The Nirmanakaya Vajradhara is surrounded by the retinue of emanated bodies, and is the nature of compassion and love for beings. Fourthly, the Three Jewels of Suchness are essence, nature, and compassion. The essence is primordial purity, free from elaboration, and possessing the four great liberations. The nature is spontaneous accomplishment, qualities excelling.
