and with yearning faith, one feels great joy towards the Guru and the Three Jewels; with respectful faith, relying on purity, one is cautious and does not transgress the teachings; with pure faith, one's mind manifestly believes in the qualities of the higher beings; with confident faith, one has no doubt about the dharmas of the ground, path, and fruition; and with faith that ascertains the profound dharma, one desires the meaning of the definitive dharma nature. In summary, it can be gathered into three: extreme purity towards the Three Jewels; desiring to adopt and abandon in relation to the Four Noble Truths; and having confident faith in the law of cause and effect. For example, pure faith is like a young child not seeing its mother; yearning faith is like a hungry person desiring food; confident faith is like a bird entering its nest. Moreover, the Sutra of the Jewel Lamp says: Faith arises like a guiding mother, it protects all qualities and makes them increase, it dispels doubts and liberates from all rivers, faith is the symbol of a city of happiness and well-being. Also, the Treasury of Qualities says: Faith is the best of wealth, treasure, and feet, like a hand, it is the root of accumulating virtue. Also, the Treasury of Wish-Fulfilling Jewels says: Unchanging from the outside like the King of Mountains, without increase or decrease like the sun, sky, and ocean, without tightness or looseness like a bowstring, without weariness like a boat bridge, constantly unceasing like a great river, possessing softness like a silk rope, unshaken by conditions, stable like the sky. As it is said, unchanging faith is like the King of Mountains, faith without increase or decrease is like the sun, faith without depth is like the ocean, faith without contrivance is like a mother, faith without limit is like the sky, faith without tightness or looseness is like a taut bowstring, faith that is not transformed by others or taken away by blame and so forth is like the sky, faith without weariness is like a boat bridge, constantly unceasing faith is like a river, respectful, soft, and adorned with humility faith is like a silk rope. Thus, the nature of one who has such faith is: Also, that same text says: The nature of faith is like good soil, it is the basis of all dharmas, and it makes the accumulation of virtue increase. Faith is like a boat.

It ferries across the ocean of existence. Like a boatman, it protects from demons and afflictions. Like a mount, it leads to the island of liberation. Like a jewel king, it fulfills all wishes. Like a hero, it subdues sins with power. It is the supreme treasure of the holy ones who accumulate merit. Thus, faith is like fertile land, where the sprout of enlightenment grows abundantly. Like a ship on the ocean, faith ferries across the ocean of samsara. Like a good boatman, faith protects from the enemy of afflictions. Faith is like a good mount, leading to the island of liberation. Faith is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, granting all desires. Faith is like a hero, destroying negativity. Thus it is said. Furthermore, although the Guru and the Three Jewels possess inconceivable compassion and blessings, it is only through faith and devotion that these can enter one's own mindstream. Therefore, if one has great faith and devotion, the compassion and blessings of the Guru and the Three Jewels will also enter greatly. Similarly, if one has moderate faith and devotion, the blessings and compassion will also enter moderately. If one has only slight faith and devotion, only slight blessings and compassion will enter. If one has no faith and devotion at all, blessings and compassion will never enter. If one has no faith, even meeting the actual Buddha and being taken care of will not benefit. Padmasambhava said: "Without faith, like a north-facing cave, the sun of compassion never has a time to shine." Also, the Ratnakuta Sutra says: "For people without faith, white dharma will not arise, like a seed burned by fire, unable to produce a blue sprout." Also, the Omniscient Dharma King said: "Those without fortune have no faith at all, their faults are infinitely vast. Like a stone at the bottom of the ocean, they are separated from the shore of liberation. Like a rudderless boat, they never have a time to cross the ocean of existence. Like a hand with a severed arm, they have no share of virtue. Like a burned seed, there is no sprout of enlightenment. Like a blind person, they do not see the form of dharma. Like being trapped in a whirlpool of samsara, they constantly wander in samsara." Therefore, among all dharmas, if one has this, it is enough, this is the faith that you know. Padmasambhava said: "With the faith that you know, blessings enter.
