Since we revere and serve even a teacher who imparts worldly knowledge, why wouldn't we generate faith, respect, and service towards a lama who guides sentient beings to attain Buddhahood? Since we make offerings even to a doctor who balances the four elements, why wouldn't we generate faith, respect, and service towards a lama who removes the chronic disease of the five poisons? Since we cherish and offer to a ferryman who saves us from daily fears, why wouldn't we generate faith, respect, and service towards a lama who protects us from the enemies of the four maras? Since we are willing to give up our lives for things that provide slight benefits like food, clothing, and wealth, why wouldn't we generate faith, respect, and service towards a lama who bestows the wish-fulfilling jewel? When relying on a lama with such thoughts, at all times and in all circumstances, all actions and behaviors should be performed in accordance with the lama's mind, and one should be skilled in guarding against actions that contradict the lama's mind. Even if severely reprimanded, one should not generate anger or resentment, like a noble horse. For the sake of the lama's errands and so on, one should not be weary of going back and forth, like a boat. Whatever good or bad tasks the lama commands, one should be able to bear them, like a bridge. One should endure all hardships, heat, and cold, like a blacksmith's anvil. One should listen to all instructions, like a servant. One should abandon pride and remain in a humble position, like a wiping cloth. One should abandon arrogance and respect everyone, like a hornless bull. One should rely on the lama in this way, as stated in the Sutra of the Arrayed Tree and other scriptures. As stated in the "Treasury of Qualities": 'Extremely guarding the lama is wise, Not being angry at reprimands is like a noble horse, Abandoning weariness in going back and forth is like a boat, Bearing all good and bad is like a bridge, Enduring all heat and cold is like an anvil, Listening to instructions is like a servant, Abandoning pride is like a wiping cloth, Abandoning arrogance is like a hornless bull, The scriptures say to rely on the lama in this way.' The above. Secondly, in terms of distinctions, there is relying through the door of intention and relying through the door of action. Firstly, relying through the door of intention is: Since the deluded appearances of our individual ordinary beings have not been liberated into the expanse, and the pure and vast appearances of existence and samsara have not arisen, we see the faults of the lama in our own deluded appearances,

The fault of seizing upon handles and pointing out faults, saying "this is bad, that is bad," is immeasurable. As it says in "The Treasury of Precious Qualities": "The monk of good fortune who has mastered the twelve divisions of scripture, is stained by the power of sin, sees the actions of the teacher as deception, after thinking well, purify your own mind." This means that the monk named Legpai Karma, who is able to master the twelve divisions of scripture and recite them, and who has attained the mind of the first dhyana, is stained by the sin of wrong views, and sees all the actions of our teacher, the compassionate one, as mere deception, exhausting all remaining merit and falling into the lower realms. After thinking well about this, it is very important to tame one's own mind on the path of virtue. Moreover, not to mention seeing sentient beings' deluded appearances as the nature of exhausting all faults and perfecting all qualities. Not only that, but thinking about the story of the noble Asanga seeing Maitreya Bodhisattva as a dog whose lower body was being eaten by worms, one should not have wrong views about any actions. In the past, most of the accomplished ones in the holy land of India, such as Saraha, appeared to be of mixed castes, without distinction between clean and unclean, and engaged in base occupations. Others held the status of servants or even servants of servants. Still others engaged in occupations such as hunters, fishermen, and butchers, which appeared to be sinful actions, even more degraded than worldly behavior. As the scripture says: "Do not have wrong views about any actions, most of the free ones in the holy land, are engaged in base occupations, servants, sinful actions, etc., even more degraded than degradation." Just as the great scholar Shri Singha saw the teacher Manjushrimitra as a householder with a wife and plowing fields. The accomplished one Maitripa saw Shavaripa doing inappropriate things such as killing pigs. Naropa saw Tilopa roasting live fish. Tsembupa saw Vajravarahi as a leper. Vajraghantapa saw Vajravarahi as a pig herder. Furthermore, the great Brahmin Rahula, in the eyes of the Brahmins, had fallen from his own caste and abandoned the behavior of an elder.
