The leftover alcohol from before was still there, and thinking it would be better to steal this now, he took it and ran away, but they saw him. They chased after him, caught him, and beat him half to death. He suffered immeasurable pain and couldn't get up from then on, lying there for many days. Later, the lama came, blessed him, and then took him away. One day, Naropa said, "I need a lot of wealth, go and steal." He went to steal from a rich man's house, but was discovered, caught, and beaten half to death again. After a few days, the lama came and asked how he was, and he replied as before. The lama blessed him and took him away again, and so on. Like this, he experienced twelve great hardships and twelve minor hardships, a total of twenty-four different hardships, all endured on one body. Having completed all these hardships, one day, he said to Naropa, "You go and fetch water, and I will light the fire and wait." When Naropa returned with the water, the lama had already lit the fire and stood up. He grabbed Naropa's throat with his left hand and said, "Naropa, show your head!" He took off his shoe with his right hand and hit him on the forehead, and Naropa fainted instantly. When he regained consciousness, all the qualities of the lama's mindstream arose in Naropa's mindstream, and the two, teacher and disciple, became inseparable in their realization. Thus, the twenty-four hardships endured by the great scholar Naropa were actually the instructions of the lama, and therefore became a method for purifying obscurations. Apart from that, there was not a single instance of meaningless toil, and no one would think that this was practice. The lama did not utter a single word of Dharma. The disciple did not practice the Dharma as if searching for a footprint, but he met an accomplished lama. Overcoming difficulties, he acted according to the lama's instructions, and through the power of purifying obscurations, realization arose in his mindstream. Therefore, there is no practice of Dharma more profound than acting according to the lama's instructions, and the benefit of simply following the lama's instructions is immense. The way in which Jetsun Milarepa relied on Lhodrak Marpa was as follows: Mila Thöpa Ga, the son of Mila Sherab Gyaltsen from Ngari Gungthang, was Jetsun Milarepa. All his wealth and possessions were taken away by his uncle Yungdrung Gyaltsen.

At that time, having learned magic and hailstorms from Yungton Trogyal of Topa Daktsang and Lhaje Nupchung, he killed thirty-five people, including his uncle's son and daughter-in-law, in a room. Because he became the enemy of the entire village, he brought down a hailstorm that was three layers of walls thick, accumulating great sins. Regretting this, he developed the thought of practicing Dharma, and according to Yungton's instructions, he went to a person named Rongton Lhaga and explained all his past experiences in detail. The lama said, "I have the instructions of the Great Perfection Dharma, which allows one to attain Buddhahood without meditation, so I will give it to you." After a few days, Rongton Lhaga said, "It seems to be true that you are a great sinner. My Dharma talk was a bit too much. Now it seems that I cannot make you upright. Now you yourself go to the monastery called Lhodrak Khrodung (in Bhutan), where there is a direct disciple of the Indian Siddha Naropa, the noble king of translators Marpa Lotsawa, a Siddha of the New Tantras, an unrivaled person in the three realms. You have a karmic connection with him from a previous life, so go there." There, just hearing the name of the translator Marpa, immeasurable joy arose in his mind, happiness that made all the hairs on his body stand on end, and tears flowed, giving rise to limitless devotion. Thinking about when he would meet the lama and see his face, he went. The lama and his consort had many special dreams and knew that the venerable one was coming. When he met the lama, he placed his feet on his head and said, "Lama, I am a great sinner from Nyimalatod. I offer my body, speech, and mind to you. I also ask the lama for food, clothing, and Dharma. Please grant me a Dharma that will allow me to attain Buddhahood in this life." The lama said, "The reputation of being a great sinner is of no use to me. I did not send you to accumulate sins for my sake. What sins have you committed?" He explained the reasons in detail. The lama said, "Well, in any case, offering body, speech, and mind is good. All three, food, clothing, and Dharma, I cannot give you. Either I will give you food and clothing, and you seek Dharma elsewhere. Or I will give you Dharma, and you seek food and clothing elsewhere. Choose between the two. If I give you Dharma, whether or not you attain Buddhahood in one lifetime depends on your own diligence." (I) said, "Well, since I have come to the lama for Dharma, I will seek food and clothing elsewhere."
