Just as one might mistake a place where a poisonous snake is coiled for the shade of a tree and go there to rest, only to be killed by the snake, those who wish to rely on the cool shade of compassion and find peaceful rest, if they rely on someone who is not a holy being, will be seized by hundreds of faults and ultimately lose the life of liberation. There is no greater deception than that. The Omniscient King of Dharma (Je Tsongkhapa) said: "Little love, compassion, wisdom, and learning, lazy and negligent without diligence, great arrogance, cunning and cruel, the five poisons are strong, seeking only this life, casting the next far away, appearing to teach Dharma but are false pretenders, like a lama who is a pile of impure filth, even if there are many bees seeking Dharma, abandon them far away, because they lead the faithful onto the wrong path and into the lower realms, therefore, those who desire liberation should never rely on them!" Thus it is said. Secondly, the spiritual teacher to be relied upon is: one whose mind is pure because they have not violated the precepts of the three vows; one who is learned because they are not confused about the texts of the sutras, tantras, and treatises; one whose mind is moistened with compassion, cherishing all limitless sentient beings as if they were their only child; one who is skilled in the rituals of the outer three pitakas and the inner four classes of secret mantra tantras; one who has manifested special qualities of abandonment and realization in their own mind-stream by relying on practical experience; one who is skilled in the methods of guiding fortunate disciples with the four means of attraction. In particular, the lama who teaches the profound essence of the secret mantra vajrayana is: one whose mind-stream is ripened by the uninterrupted flow of the maturing empowerment water, as explained in the precious tantras; one who has not violated the samaya and vows undertaken at the time of empowerment; one whose mind-stream is peaceful and tamed because they have few afflictions and conceptual thoughts; one who has comprehended all the essential meanings of the foundation, path, and fruition tantras of the secret mantra vajrayana; one who has perfected the signs of approach and accomplishment, such as seeing the face of the yidam deity; one whose own mind-stream is liberated by realizing the meaning of reality; one whose heart is filled with compassion, therefore seeking only the benefit of others; one who has abandoned attachment to this worldly life, therefore having few affairs; one who gladly accepts the next life, therefore diligently thinking about the Dharma; one whose heart is filled with sadness because they see samsara as suffering, and who also urges others to do so. Teaching disciples in a way that is suitable to their individual capacities.
