Therefore, (the king) requested permission for (the monk) to leave. The king went to see the monk off, and seeing the monk exhausted, he deeply regretted it, saying, "I have delayed this matter for too long and accumulated great sins." The monk replied, "It's okay, it's my own karma." The king asked, "What kind of karma have you accumulated?" The monk replied, "In the past, I was born as a thief. At that time, I stole a calf, and the owner chased me. I fled into the depths of the forest and abandoned the calf in front of a solitary hermit who was practicing alone, and then ran away. That hermit was then caught and imprisoned in a pit for six days. The maturation of that karma caused me to suffer the pain of the lower realms in many lifetimes. The suffering I am experiencing in this life is also the final result of that karma's maturation." Furthermore, nowadays some people say that it is enough to realize emptiness, and there is no need to adopt or reject good and evil. One should never utter such a wrong view. The Omniscient One (Je Tsongkhapa) said, "By negating cause and effect with empty talk, even if one thinks they have reached the ultimate of the unconditioned Dharma, by abandoning the two accumulations of merit and wisdom, the opportunity for practice is cut off. Practicing union is my heartfelt advice." The great accomplished Birwapa said, "Even if there is no doubt about samsara and one is fearless, one should be wary of even the smallest sinful actions." In the Sutra Requested by Light Protector, it says, "Even though you realize that all phenomena are empty, have faith in the ripening of karma." Jowo Je (Atisha) said, "As long as conceptual thoughts have not ceased, karma exists, so have faith in the ripening of karma." Some people say that if you realize emptiness, you don't need compassion. Some people say, 'Children, cultivate compassion with good intentions, cultivating emptiness is meaningless.' These people are like what is said in the sutra: 'A dog puts a dry bone in its mouth and clings to its own blood, guarding it and hating others very much. The inverted clinging of the world is the same.' They have not found the correct path of uniting skillful means of great compassion and wisdom of emptiness. The venerable Sarahapa said, 'Emptiness without compassion, that one has not attained the supreme path; but if one only cultivates compassion, one will remain in samsara and will not attain liberation.' Thus, desiring liberation

If people possess the great compassion as a means to liberate all sentient beings pervading the sky from samsara, and the wisdom to realize the selflessness of all phenomena, they will not dwell on either extreme. With wisdom, one does not dwell in existence, free from the delusion of the extreme of existence; with compassion, one does not dwell in peace, purifying attachment to the extreme of peace. One should recognize that the precious mind of bodhichitta is the unerring cause for attaining perfect enlightenment, and cultivate it. Fifth, contemplating the benefits of liberation: Omniscient Jigme Lingpa said: Whether one attains the state of a Shravaka, Pratyekabuddha, or Perfect Buddha, all three are peaceful and cool, liberated from the suffering of samsara, how happy I am! Among these states, now that I have encountered the Mahayana, I should generate the intention to cultivate all the ten virtues, four immeasurables, six perfections, four dhyanas, four formless absorptions, shamatha-vipashyana, etc., desiring only perfect enlightenment, and generate bodhichitta. The main practice is without object, and the subsequent practice is augmented by dedication and aspiration, and is upheld by the Three Jewels, thereby engaging in practice. This is what the尊者 said. Sixth, the manner of relying on a spiritual friend: It is divided into five aspects: the characteristics of a spiritual friend to be relied upon, the characteristics of the one who relies (i.e., the disciple), the manner of how to rely, learning the view and conduct, and explaining the benefits of relying. First, the characteristics of a spiritual friend to be relied upon, divided into what to abandon and what to গ্রহণ. First, regarding the spiritual friend to be abandoned, Omniscient Jigme Lingpa spoke of four metaphors: like a wooden self-grinder, like a hand-operated well, like a madman's guide, like a blind leader. Just like the Brahmins who guard their lineage, or like a pond where the dwelling has deteriorated, the fruits of hearing and thinking do not remain but enter into bathing. Like a guide who is like a wooden self-grinder. Just like the Brahmins who only take lineage as important, lineage being the maternal side and clan being the paternal side, like guarding the traditions of both, even though there is not the slightest merit of hearing, thinking, and meditating in one's own continuum, one thinks, "I am the prince or nephew of so-and-so lama, or I am considered the reincarnation of the previous one," and therefore I am superior to others, my
