Thus, the explanation is complete. Third, explaining the suffering of animals, there are two types: those dwelling in the depths and those scattered about. First, those dwelling in the depths are: In the boundless ocean, there are beings of various shapes and forms, like the sediment of beer. Generally, the small ones are as small as a fraction of a hair tip, like a mote of sunlight, like a mustard seed; the large ones are ten thousand yojanas in size, some elephants have bodies of seven yojanas, large crocodiles are two thousand seven hundred yojanas, and some nagas are equal to Mount Meru, and so on. The differences in suffering are also that they eat each other; the large swallow the small, and the small bore into the bodies of the large to eat them. In some naga's abodes, a rain of gravel falls every day, burning flesh and bones. Some suffer alone, separated from friends. They are eaten by fierce garudas. The space between the iron fences of the continents is called the darkness between the continents, where there is no light from the sun and moon, and even the stretching of limbs cannot be seen, and so on. Second, those scattered about are: The insects, bees, birds, wild animals, and other beings that dwell in mountains, water, plains, rocks, and the sky, and so on, suffer immeasurable suffering from heat and cold, hunger and thirst, fear and terror, and eating each other. As the venerable Nagarjuna said: "They eat each other, endlessly. Some die for pearls, wool, bones, and blood, For meat and skin." For example, fish are killed for pearls, sheep are killed for wool, elephants are raised for tusks and bones, wild asses and yaks are killed for meat and blood, tigers and leopards are killed for skin, and so on. Each being's own body becomes the cause of its own killing, suffering such pain, as well as the pain of being used and exploited, which is endless. As it says in "Resting the Mind in its Natural State": "Birds and wild animals scattered in the human realm, Are tormented by hunters and endangered by their own harm. Horses, cattle, camels, sheep, and donkeys, Are used, beaten, and tormented, their suffering is endless." So it is said. As for lifespan, the "Essence of the Sun Sutra" says: The short-lived live only for a moment, and the long-lived

It is said that some lives last until the end of a kalpa. The Omniscient One said that some lives are short, lasting only a moment or a day, while the dragon king Jogpo (འཇོག་པོ།) and others can survive an intermediate kalpa. In the Abhidharmakosha it says, "Jogpo (འཇོག་པོ།) is a kalpa." In the Sutra Requested by the Dragon King of the Sea, it says, "I have lived in this place in the sea for one intermediate kalpa." Thus, thinking of the suffering of the three lower realms, it is difficult for us to endure even putting our hands in the fire, being naked in winter, or going without food and drink for a day. How then can we endure the suffering of hell beings, hungry ghosts, and animals? The Letter to a Friend says, "Seeing, hearing, remembering, and reciting pictures of hell, and even making images of them, cause fear. What need is there to mention experiencing unbearable suffering?" Like seeing pictures of hell on walls, hearing others tell about it, remembering past experiences, or reading about the suffering of hell in writing, and even making images of hell out of clay, all cause fear. What need is there to mention experiencing the unbearable ripening of karma? Formerly, two nephews of the Venerable Ananda were lazy and did not strive in the Dharma, so the son of Maudgalyayana took them to visit hell. From then on, they were very afraid and developed renunciation in their minds. If they remembered hell in the morning, they could not eat lunch; if they remembered hell in the evening, they would vomit what they had eaten. Fourth, explaining the suffering of humans. From the Ten Doors of Entering Wisdom: "The suffering of suffering, the suffering of change, and pervasive suffering of conditioning, these three are called the three root sufferings. Birth, old age, sickness, death, separation from loved ones, encountering what is disliked, not finding what is desired, and the five aggregates of appropriation are suffering. Suffering is taught to have eight aspects." Thus, there are three great root sufferings, four great rivers of suffering of birth, old age, sickness, and death, the suffering of fearing encounter with enemies, the suffering of fearing separation from loved ones, the suffering of unwanted things befalling one, and the suffering of not obtaining what is desired.
