Experiencing various sufferings such as being pressed between indefinite suffering rocks, freezing and stiffening in snow and ice, being boiled in hot springs, being burned in fire, and being covered under trees and leaves. The lifespan is half a day and night, a moment, and many years, and because of being tormented by suffering, they are called "Ephemeral." Some think that because some beings only live for a day, they are called "Ephemeral," but this is unreasonable. As it says in the "Iron House" story: "Still many beings remain in this hell." Some think that because they are alone and without companions, they are called "Ephemeral," but this is also unreasonable. In the past, when thousands of people went to the mountains near Grozhin, five hundred monks lived in a pleasant monastery. At noon, when the ghanta was struck and they gathered, the monastery turned into an iron house, and the bowls and cups became weapons, and they only beat each other. When the time for gathering passed, they dispersed and remained as before. It is said that this was the result of many monks arguing during lunchtime in the time of Kashyapa. These and so on. Second, explaining the suffering of the pretas. Most pretas are located five hundred yojanas below this world, and the scattered pretas are spread all over the earth, mountains, and rivers. Although thirty-six types of pretas are mentioned, in general, the Omniscient One said: "Those with outer obscurations, even when seeing good things, dry up. Those with inner obscurations, their heart and lungs burn. The common obscuration is that food and drink are only imagined. Even in twelve years, the sound of water is not heard." As it is said, those with outer obscurations are tormented by food and drink, their bodies are dry and thin, and their throats and limbs are thin. From afar, they see piles of food, rivers, and fruit-bearing trees, but when they arrive there, the rivers dry up or turn into pus and blood. The trees have no fruit and turn into dry stumps and thorns. Or there are many people guarding with weapons, and so on, they suffer such suffering. Those with inner obscurations, as it says in "Resting the Mind in its Natural State": Inner

As it is said, "The belly blazes with burning flames, and smoke billows from the mouth along with flames." It means that the mouth is as narrow as the eye of a needle, the throat is as thin as a horse's tail, the belly is as vast as the ocean, the limbs are as thin as straw, and there is the suffering of not finding food and drink. Even if found, there is the suffering of the mouth not being able to hold it. Even if the mouth can hold it, there is the suffering of the throat not being able to pass it. Even if it passes through the throat, there is the suffering of the belly not being filled. Even if the belly is slightly filled, the internal organs are all burned because flames blaze in the chest and so on, and smoke billows from the mouth along with flames, and the bones between the joints rub together and burn, and so on. Those with common obscurations suffer from poverty and destitution, hunger and thirst, ugliness, incomplete senses, constant harm from others, and not to mention tasting food and drink, they have not even heard the name of water for hundreds of years, and are extremely miserable. They constantly suffer unbearable hunger and thirst, and must endure immeasurable heat and cold. As it is said in the "Letter to a Friend": "For the pretas in the summer season, even the moon is hot, and in winter even the sun is cold." Like rain of sand and burning stones falling, in the summer season even the moon feels hot, and in the winter season even the sun becomes cold. When tormented by heat, even the blizzard with a cold touch becomes warm, and when tormented by cold, even the fire becomes cold to the touch without warmth. As it is said in the "Letter of Exhortation": "When threatened by heat, even the blizzard turns hot, and when extremely exhausted, even the fire turns cold." Their lifespan is, as it is said in the "Wish-Fulfilling Jewel Treasury": "Lifespan, a hundred human years is a preta's day, one's own five hundred years are spent suffering." It means that one hundred human years are counted as one day for a preta, and one must suffer for five hundred years. As it is said in the "Abhidharma Treasury": "Taking a human month as one day, one can live for five hundred years." It is also said in the "Letter to a Friend": "Some pretas have a lifespan of five thousand years, and some pretas have a lifespan of ten thousand years." Regarding the body, the "Essence of the Sun Sutra" says: "Large pretas are a thousand yojanas tall, and small pretas are tall
