Four thousand years are counted as one day in the Howling Hell. The fifth great hell is the Great Howling Hell, as it is said: "The Great Howling Hell has two layers of iron chambers, The burning flames incinerate suffering without end." As it is said, Yama's servants drive countless hell beings into the two-layered iron chamber, strike them with hammers, and are tormented by burning flames, experiencing intense suffering. The lifespan is: Eight hundred human years are counted as one day of the Paranirmitavasavartin gods, eight thousand years of the Great Howling Hell are counted as one day, and one can live to be eight thousand years old. The sixth is the Hot Hell, as the Wish-Fulfilling Treasury says: "In the Hot Hell, on the ground burning with fire, The skin is peeled off and nailed with stakes." As it is said, on the iron-burning ground burning with flames, the skin of the body is peeled off, nailed with stakes, and beaten with hammers, etc., to experience suffering. The lifespan is: Sixteen hundred human years are counted as one day of the Paranirmitavasavartin gods, and those sixteen thousand years are taken as one day of the Hot Hell, and one can live to be sixteen thousand years old. The seventh is the Extremely Hot Hell, as the Resting in the Nature of Mind says: "The Extremely Hot Hell has two layers of iron chambers, Burning flames and three-pointed spears pierce, The crown of the head and both shoulders are peeled open and wrapped with iron plates, Suffering from being boiled in a large copper pot." As it is said, in the two-layered iron chamber, being tormented by burning flames, from the outside, the flames of the four directions, eight intermediate directions, and the two upper and lower layers, and from the inside, the flames burning in the lungs and heart, being burned by eleven piles of flames, piercing the body with three-pointed spears, wrapping the body with burning iron plates, and in a large copper pot filled with boiling water of three thousand great thousands of worlds, countless hell beings are boiled, the skin and flesh fly apart, turning into white bones, which is extremely painful. The lifespan is: One can live for half a middle kalpa, which is immeasurable when measured in human years. The eighth is the Uninterrupted Hell, as the Resting in the Nature of Mind says: "In the Uninterrupted Hell, in the iron chamber burning with flames, Hell beings wail and cry out, Flames and beings cannot be distinguished, Like a butter lamp burning, clinging to the wick."

As it says, "Just the breath, located in the middle of the fire," inside the burning iron house, the workers pile up pieces of red-hot iron as large as Mount Meru, and put countless hell beings in the middle. When the tiger and leopard skin bellows are blown, the flames and bodies become indistinguishable, and in the midst of a pile of fire, only the sound of wailing can be heard, and the body cannot be seen. Furthermore, they are beaten with Yama's hammer, sawed with saws, crushed in mortars, cooked in large cauldrons, pierced with spears and tridents, and the burning iron plates are wrapped around the head and tail of the body like ropes, etc., and the suffering is immeasurable. The nature of these sufferings is intense heat, with many varieties, and without interruption or cessation, so it is called Avīci or the Hell of Uninterrupted Suffering. The size of most of their bodies is also as stated in the Sutra of Definitive Discrimination of the Supreme Peace: "Even in many kalpas, the body becomes five hundred yojanas. There are also five hundred heads. Each of those heads has no fewer than five hundred tongues. Each tongue has a plow. It is no less than five hundred measures. It plows with intense burning, by the sinful act of slander." And in the Nirvana Sutra, it is said, "Those who have committed the eight Avīci karmas have bodies of eighty thousand yojanas, and the tongues of those who slander the Dharma and individuals of the Mahayana are one hundred thousand yojanas." Regarding lifespan, the Omniscient Great One said, "One must endure for the duration of a middle kalpa; there is no suffering greater than that." And in the Karma Vibhanga, it is said, "At the gate of Avīci, there is an iron mountain of sixty-one thousand yojanas. When those hell beings have worn it away by throwing it, their lifespan is exhausted, which is immeasurable." This is explained as the lifespan of those who have committed the karma of abandoning the Dharma and whose obscurations are extremely heavy due to breaking vows, etc. Second, the surrounding hells. The Mind at Rest says, "Around the outside of the Avīci house are four places: the pit of embers, the mire of corpses, the plain of weapons, and the immeasurable river, four by four, sixteen." That is, in the four directions of Avīci, there are pits of embers, mires of corpses, plains of razors, and forests of sword leaves.
