Therefore, it is necessary to practice mind training. The sutra says: Tomorrow and the next life, which will come first is unknown, do not strive for tomorrow's affairs, one should strive for the affairs of the next life. Thus it is said. Even when waking up in the morning, there is no guarantee that one will not die on this day. After falling asleep again tonight, one does not know which will come first, the appearance of the night or the appearance of the next life, so one should strive to do good. As the great Bodhisattva Shantideva said: It is not reasonable to live in comfort, thinking that one will not die today. Thus it is said. Thinking about the coming and going of breath, there is no certainty whether one will be able to exhale after inhaling, or whether there will be an opportunity to inhale after exhaling. As the glorious protector, the noble Nagarjuna said: It is very wonderful, which is the opportunity to wake up from exhaling, inhaling, and falling asleep. Thus it is said. In short, the law of the Lord of Death, Yama, is irreversible, like the shadow of the setting sun. The contaminated body has no essence, like an old tree on a cliff. Life is unreliable, like a lamp in the wind. All the glory and wealth of the world are impermanent like a rainbow in the sky, unstable like dew on the tip of grass, without essence like a water bubble, and like a snake's skin, they are things to be discarded. Having seen these, now, when one has autonomy, one should not let life be wasted, but should practice the essence of the true meaning of the Dharma, which will surely be beneficial at the time of death. The sutra says: Who knows whether one will die tomorrow? One should strive diligently today, know that the great army of the Lord of Death is not your friend. Thus it is said. Kharagpa said: There is no place to stay without dying, one will surely die and die quickly, death is of no benefit to anything, do not be idle, rely on your own mind. Thus it is said. The "Resting the Mind in its Natural State" says: Like a tree without heartwood by the water, how can an illusory house not be destroyed? Therefore, one will surely die, when one will die, where one will die, and how one will die, there is no certainty about these. Thus it is said. If one meditates on death and impermanence at all times and in all ways, it will initially become the cause for entering the Dharma, in the middle it will become the condition for striving in virtuous deeds, and ultimately it will become the helper for attaining the clear light Dharmakaya. As Lord Milarepa said: I went to the mountains because I was afraid of death, and I meditated on when I would die, without certainty.

By contemplating, one attains the firm ground of the immortal, inherent state. Now, the fear of death is abandoned. As the Peerless Dagpo Rinpoche said: First, one needs an understanding that is like an arrow hitting the vital point of a person without obstruction. Second, one needs to meditate without distraction, like a mother who has lost her only child. Third, one needs an understanding that is without effort, like a shepherd chasing livestock driven away by enemies. Geshe Potowa said: If one meditates on death and impermanence, first, it becomes the cause for entering the Dharma; second, it becomes the condition for urging virtuous actions; third, it becomes the friend for realizing the equality of Dharma. Again, if one meditates on impermanence, first, it becomes the cause for severing the ties of this life; second, it becomes the condition for turning away from attachment to all of samsara; third, it becomes the friend for entering the path of nirvana. Again, if one meditates on impermanence, first, it becomes the cause for generating faith; second, it becomes the condition for initiating diligence; third, it becomes the friend for generating wisdom. Again, if one meditates on impermanence and it arises in one's being, first, it becomes the cause for seeking the Dharma; second, it becomes the condition for practicing the Dharma; third, it becomes the friend for perfecting the Dharma. Thus it is said. Therefore, the benefits of meditating on death and impermanence are stated in the Vinaya Sutra: My retinue is like a virtuous vase, better than giving umbrellas, food, and so on to a hundred monks like Shariputra and Maudgalyayana. Remembering the impermanence of conditioned phenomena for a single moment is the most supreme. Third, the instruction on the suffering of samsara is divided into general and specific. First, the general: From beginningless time until now, we have been revolving in the places of the three realms of samsara, like a potter's wheel, or the rope of a water bucket, or a bee in a jar, going from one place to another. In this revolving, there is not a single sentient being who has not been a parent, enemy, friend, or neutral party to each other. As Lord Nagarjuna said: Father is son, mother is wife, beings become enemies, and were also friends. Because there are reversed situations, there is no certainty in samsara. Also, in the Mindfulness Sutra it says: Monks, you should be weary of the realm of existence. Why is that? Because in the beginningless samsara, one was born as a companion and then abandoned.
