Possessing wealth and enjoyment, and even having a lifespan that can be extended infinitely, but due to the influence of afflictions and non-virtuous deeds, lifespan and merit gradually decrease, even decreasing to ten years of age. After experiencing all the stages of increasing and decreasing, one ultimately cannot escape the nature of being destroyed by fire, water, and wind. In particular, observing the changes of the four seasons also reveals impermanence. As the Omniscient One said, "Spring, summer, autumn, winter, and spring, change in sequence, increasing sorrow due to impermanence." Just like that, even day, night, and hours change from moment to moment, and there is nothing that is constant and stable. As it is said in "Resting the Mind in its Natural State," "Even the changing of day and night, moments and instants, brings the Lord of Death closer to his abode, like all the rivers flowing towards the ocean, or like the sun setting on the western mountain." As it is said, all beings are impermanent and will eventually die, all accumulations are impermanent and will eventually be exhausted, all gatherings are impermanent and will eventually disperse, all constructions are impermanent and will eventually collapse, all heights are impermanent and will eventually fall. Similarly, enemies and friends, happiness and suffering, good and bad, and all conceptual thoughts are also impermanent. Lofty like the sky, powerful like thunder, wealthy like a dragon, beautiful like a god, enchanting like a rainbow. No matter who it is, death will suddenly arrive, without any autonomy. As it is said in the "Lotus Sutra," "Where there is birth, there is death; where there is gathering, there is separation." And as it is said in the "Extensive Play Sutra," "The three realms are impermanent like autumn clouds, beings wander like the moon in water, the flow of life is like a rapid stream in the mountains, all actions are like watching a dance." Just like that, in today's sunlight, one may be surrounded by family, wealth, relatives, and friends, and yet embark alone on the long road of the afterlife, which is uncertain. Sixth, contemplate impermanence by considering the uncertainty of the causes of death. As the Venerable Aryadeva said, "The causes of death are very many, the causes of life are very few, and even the causes of life can become causes of death." Like a venomous snake, deadly poison, a life-threatening weapon, an enemy who creates obstacles to happiness, and the suffering of

There are many causes of death, such as sudden and unexpected accidents like fire. Furthermore, food and medicine, which are considered conditions for survival, can also become causes of death. As it is said in the Vinaya Sutra: "Some die from overeating, and some die from medicine. Not to mention inharmonious factors, therefore nothing is certain." Life is of a nature that decreases without increasing. As it is said in the "Words on Impermanence": "Like a pond with a breached dam, life only decreases and does not increase. Since everyone is on the path to death, who can trust in sudden life?" And as it is said in the "Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life": "Day and night do not stay, this life is constantly being depleted, and there is no source of increase from elsewhere, how can I not die?" Seventh, contemplate impermanence by considering strong desire. As it is said in the "Treasury of Precious Instructions": "Contemplate relatives and friends as guests, contemplate the place where you stay as a guesthouse, contemplate food, wealth, enjoyment, and entertainment as games, contemplate whatever you do as a dream, wherever you go, near or far, contemplate death. If you possess these, you will be liberated from the state of samsara." Like this, at all times, whatever you do, such as going and staying, say with your mouth that this is the last action, and also contemplate it in your mind. In such a case, regarding the instructions on impermanence, there are many different ways to practice. But in summary, here we practice through three roots, nine reasons, and three determinations. The three roots are: you will definitely die, it is uncertain when you will die, and at the time of death, nothing other than the Dharma will help. The nine reasons are: no one has remained without dying in the past, the body is compounded, life is exhausted in an instant, there is no certainty in life, the body has no essence, there are many causes of death, relatives and friends cannot help, food and wealth cannot help, and your own body cannot help. The three determinations are: because you will definitely die, you must resolve to practice only the Dharma that will definitely benefit at the time of death; because it is uncertain when you will die, you must resolve to practice the Dharma from now on; and because at the time of death nothing other than the Dharma will help, you must resolve to practice only the Dharma. When you go to sleep at night, also think about whether the sun will rise tomorrow or the appearance of the next life will come first.
