Flags and victory banners. On the twenty-third, the seven royal emblems and treasure vases are placed in the eight directions. The sun and moon are placed in the east and west. On the twenty-fifth, Rahu and the fire of time are placed in the north and south. Thus it is said. Fifth, the accumulation of Kusali's merit by cutting off the four maras at once. Its essence is the perfection of going beyond, the union of sutra and tantra in accordance with mantra. Called the Dharma of Cutting, the Cutting of Demons, it is the cutting of the four maras that bind samsara, only on the arrogance, discrimination, and clinging of the mind. In general, the self-language of this tradition is: Four pairs and eight branches to fill, Six metaphors express greatness. Thus it is said. The first is that, from the point of view of the petitioner, there are two types: male lineage and female lineage. From the point of view of essence, there are two types: strict ritual and scattered. From the point of view of general dissemination, there are two types: early dissemination and late dissemination. From the point of view of appearance, there are two types: oral transmission and treasure transmission, which are four pairs and eight branches. The six metaphors are: This cutting is like a white snow mountain, whether snow falls on the snow mountain, it is white, or if it does not snow, it is also white. Similarly, the yogi who cuts, whether he has the wisdom of hearing or not, is fine. Like a lion, it can overwhelm many and be fearless alone. The cutter can associate with many people, or he can walk alone. Like the sound of a large drum, the large drum can have the sound of other musical instruments, or it can not, similarly, this Dharma gate can have other virtuous friends or not. Like a spring of accomplishment, the water of accomplishment springs forth according to the number of people, similarly, this method can be learned according to the capacity of the individual. Like a broken piece of gold and jade, the large one is valuable, and the small one also has a corresponding value, similarly, studying cutting extensively has immeasurable merits, and studying a little can also benefit oneself and others. Like the hair of a good horse, the best horse has a beautiful appearance, and the color of the hair does not matter, similarly, the person who has perfected the cutting, whether he is high or low, has more blessings than others. The determination of the cutting is briefly stated as: the object of cutting, what is to be cut, the cutter, and how to cut, four types. The first is,

Just as when cutting down a tree, the place where it is cut and falls is the ground, similarly, the place where one abides without attachment after severing clinging is the expanse of Dharma, the wisdom, the space of Bodhicitta. Abiding in that is the abiding of the noble ones, possessing the nature of the three doors of liberation. In that state, the four maras have no room to roam, being equal like the sky. Therefore, it is said to be cutting the four maras in the expanse of Dharma, or the object of cutting. What is to be cut is clinging, which, like a fish caught by a hook, is like a net connected to the four maras. What cuts is the wisdom that realizes selflessness, like a sword. How does one cut? By seeing that the four objects are without truth, the clinging to the object is severed. Therefore, the clinging that connects the object and the subject is cut. Just as for all sentient beings, if one were to gather the types that obstruct and generate displeasure, they can be gathered into four categories. If these are cut, one completely triumphs from the battlefield of cutting obstacles, therefore it is cutting the four maras. As Machig Labdrön said: Cut the clinging to objects with obstruction. Cut the clinging to mind without obstruction. Cut the clinging to joy and attachment. Cut the clinging to the conceited self. As it is said, being bound in the net of demons and falling is due to the powerful force of the clinging of conceptual thought, therefore it must be cut. Where does it cling? It clings to the conceptual mind within the nature of mind itself. Ultimately, there is no clinging or binding in the nature of mind, but due to the power of conceptual thought, it appears as if there is clinging, just as clouds gather in the sky, obscuring the face of non-conceptualization, and obstructing seeing as it is. This is called obstruction or clinging. What clings? The four maras. How does it cling? The type with obstruction clings because the mind and object are connected, because many attachments, aversions, harms, and fears arise from making it an object. Without obstruction is the clinging of the mind, just the mere appearance of a thought in the mind, not abandoning it immediately, but clinging to it greatly, causing various afflictions to increase. The joyful mara is the clinging of attachment, whatever one is attached to, one is bound by it, like a pig attached to impurity. The mara that is conceited or clings to self, such as "I am," is clinging to the thought of "I, I," like something solid and unchanging.
