Whatever causes danger and allows suffering is called a harmful obstacle. Third, whatever obstructs one's own body, life, fortune, power, merit, and the attainment of liberation is called an obstructing condition, these are the three external harms. Fourth, the co-emergent ignorance, or the self-grasping of "I," whatever name it is given, it does not grant liberation and is the root that generates all faults, the source of all unwanted things, the extremely subtle and difficult-to-detect destroyer that lies dormant. From beginningless time, it only engages in negative actions, and that is called the demon of karma. In the context of the four maras, it is the mara of pride. Also, Machig says: Fifth, one's own intermediate state consciousness, called a গন্ধর্ব (Gandharva, dri za, 食香). From the time of entering the womb of Padmasambhava (Pema), until this body is completely formed, until the time of death, before the flesh, bones, and skin are separated, there is a malicious non-human who says, "I am the owner of this gross body made of flesh and blood." He leads various karmic demons and causes the body to deteriorate, and that is called the body demon. Sixth, the place where one dwells is called the demon of the place, there are three. Thus, all sentient beings of the six demons and the three realms, there is none who has not been one's parents, so one must contemplate that they are certainly one's parents. In particular, the two parents who gave birth to this present body are called the root parents, and they should be cherished. Taking the six demons and the two parents as the main eight, all sentient beings of the three realms, from the general suffering of samsara, especially the suffering of the three lower realms, and the individual suffering of each sentient being, even down to the subtle sufferings, whatever suffering they are tormented by, freeing them from all of that, in order to establish them in unsurpassed enlightenment, I will attain Buddhahood. For that purpose, I will practice the Chöd of Mahamudra. Thus, with the eight as the main ones, all sentient beings of the three realms, if one takes refuge for one's own benefit apart from benefiting them, that is the way of the lesser vehicle. Machig says: The stain of self-interest...

Even without the slightest thought of self-interest, until a unique and pure altruistic mind arises, one should train the mind and repeatedly generate Bodhicitta. In this state where Bodhicitta does not diminish, gather all the beings of appearance and existence before oneself, thinking: In order to liberate them from the suffering of Samsara, I will take refuge in the true deities, the Three Jewels. First, recite "ཕཊཿ" (Tibetan, फट, phaṭ, Phat - meaning "cut through") three times and blow the thighbone trumpet three times to summon the gods and demons. Thus it is said, summoning gods and demons, whether to eliminate the inauspiciousness of a haunted place, or to remove obstacles for one's own residence, patrons, etc., whenever signs of severance appear, one should practice according to what is said in the respective Chöd (severance) ritual. My Guru said that for daily practice, it is only necessary to visualize the assembly gathering in an instant through peaceful means, and this is also mentioned in the Chöd texts. Therefore, one should contemplate that there is no sentient being in the six realms and three worlds who has not been one's parent, one must contemplate in this way. In particular, the two parents who gave birth to this present body are called the root parents, and they should be cherished. One should liberate all sentient beings of the three realms, led by the six classes of beings, the two parents, and the eight classes of gods and demons, from the general suffering of Samsara, especially the suffering of the three lower realms, and from the individual subtle sufferings of each sentient being, from all the sufferings they endure, In order to place them in the state of unsurpassed Bodhi, I will attain Buddhahood. For this purpose, I will practice the Chöd of Mahamudra. Thus it is said, one should take refuge for the benefit of all sentient beings of the three realms, led by the eight classes of gods and demons. If one takes refuge only for one's own benefit, that is the way of the Hinayana. Machig Labdrön said: Until a pure and unadulterated altruistic mind arises, without the slightest trace of self-interest, one should train the mind and repeatedly generate Bodhicitta. In this state where Bodhicitta does not diminish, gather all the beings of appearance and existence before oneself, thinking: In order to liberate them from the suffering of Samsara, I will take refuge in the true deities, the Three Jewels.
