The four are: the suffering of searching for what is not there and not finding it, the suffering of not being able to maintain what one has, the suffering of fearing to meet hateful enemies, and the suffering of fearing to be separated from beloved relatives. The four inner sufferings are: the four sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death. Even gods have desire gods, and the twelve gods who have attained the body of meditative concentration in the realm of form, and the formless realm. All of them are attached to and enjoy their respective enjoyments of meditative concentration, without the opportunity for liberation. Eventually, the enjoyment of meditative concentration will also be exhausted, and when death comes, they will fall into the lower realms such as the three lower realms. There are also many such faults. In short, no matter how perfect the enjoyment is, it is the suffering of samsara itself, and the sole cause of suffering. The happiness of samsara is impermanent and of a changing nature, and happiness and desire lead to suffering. For example, when tormented by heat, coolness seems like happiness, but too much coolness also becomes the suffering of coolness; when feeling cool, heat seems like happiness, but too much heat also becomes the suffering of heat. Therefore, the happiness of the peak of existence is also impermanent, and one should understand that it is like dew on the tip of a blade of grass, the Buddha said. The "Severance Practice, Six Branches" also says: Humans have four external sufferings, namely the suffering of searching for what is not there and not finding it, the suffering of not being able to maintain what one has, the suffering of fearing to meet hateful enemies, and the suffering of fearing to be separated from beloved relatives. The four inner sufferings are: the four sufferings of birth, old age, sickness, and death. Asuras have the suffering of fighting and so on, and gods have the suffering of death, falling, and so on. Therefore, no matter where one is born, there is no opportunity for happiness. One must recognize suffering as suffering, and thus generate faith in wanting liberation, as it is said. Pervasive suffering, the suffering of change, and the suffering of suffering also exist. To this, Machig said: One must turn one's mind away from the happiness of gods and humans, and generate a non-common mind of wanting to be liberated from all of samsara. Thinking about this at least once a day is a vow, she said. Second, Nirvana...

Therefore, turning away from one's own benefit and accomplishing the benefit of others. Machig said: There is not a single one of these suffering and impoverished sentient beings who has not been my parent. For the sake of all of them, I want to attain Bodhi, therefore I study the two paths of aspiration and practice. Turning away from the thought of wanting liberation for oneself and entering the Mahayana path of altruistic Bodhi is the only path of a great and extraordinary being. It will be explained in detail below. Third, not for one's own benefit, but for the benefit of all sentient beings, studying the path of cause and effect is the truth of the path. The causal condition is the disciple, and the empowering condition is the guru. The causal conditions come together, and it arises from practicing the path taught by the holy ones. How to walk the path depends on the guru, and the practice depends on the sequence of the individual's faculties. Asuras have the suffering of fighting and so on, and gods have the suffering of death and falling and so on. Therefore, there is no opportunity for happiness no matter where one is born.
