Haven't found the place of fear. Haven't found the one who fears within. Haven't found the nature of fear in between. If it exists, it can be found. If it doesn't exist, it can't be found. Therefore, rest comfortably in that state. The practice of the three nights: When first going to Chöd, one must go with three states: great view, experience of meditation, and great essence of conduct. The great view is that even the body and wisdom of the Buddha above are not truly established as real. Below, even the lifespan of hell and the suffering of the body from the cold are never truly established as real, not even a particle. One should think like this. The experience of meditation is to not separate from the experience of recognition that was introduced during the introduction of self-nature. In meditative equipoise, all phenomena are never there, not even an appearance, like the center of the sky. In post-meditation, even though there is appearance, one should know that it is not real, like a dream or illusion. The great essence of conduct is to have no fear or hesitation no matter what happens, such as sickness, suffering, obstacles, hindrances, cruelty, etc. Without doubt or hesitation, without abandoning or adopting, without hope or fear, without hesitation, like a wolf running into a flock of sheep, or like a lion leaping into a herd of deer, one goes without fear or hesitation. Having arrived, one should practice these three words: That is, relying on gods and demons to cut off conceptual thoughts, relying on fear to cut off self-grasping, and relying on obstacles to cut off samsara and nirvana. First, relying on gods and demons to cut off conceptual thoughts: Like this, the nature of mind has never been a thing, and in the future, it is impossible for a thing to be born. Therefore, if even I, the owner, do not know this nature of mind, then if you, demon, can find it, then search for it. Imagine that the demon is huge and black, swaying, terrifying, with many arms and legs, holding various weapons. Meditate on it causing various harms to oneself. See if the mind benefits or harms the non-existent. See if the non-existent mind turns into a thing. See if gods and demons truly exist. Second, relying on fear to cut off self-grasping: If fear arises, then

Also become more fearful, more afraid, and more nervous. Relying on that, see if you can find this unreal, wavering consciousness. You should observe the instigator of fear and what the cause of fear is. Having meditative experience is: the experience introduced earlier during the introduction should not be abandoned. In meditative equipoise, all phenomena are always non-existent, even appearances are non-existent, like the center of the sky. In post-meditation, although there are only appearances, you should know that they are not real, like dreams and illusions. The great essence of conduct is: no matter what happens, such as illness, suffering, adverse conditions, obstacles, cruelty, etc., do not be afraid or nervous, do not doubt or hesitate, do not accept or reject, do not hope or fear, do not waver, just like a jackal running into a flock of sheep, or a lion leaping into a herd of animals, act without fear. After arriving, you should practice these three words, that is, relying on gods and demons to eradicate conceptual thoughts, relying on fear to eradicate self-grasping, and relying on obstacles to eradicate samsara and nirvana. First, relying on gods and demons to eradicate conceptual thoughts is: like this, the nature of mind has never existed as a real thing, and it is impossible for a real thing to arise in the future. Therefore, if even I, the master, do not understand such a nature of mind, then if you, the demon, find it, go and look for it. Then visualize that the demon is huge and black, swaying, terrifying, with many hands and feet, holding various weapons, and that it will bring you various harms. Observe the mind, see if the unreal mind has benefit or harm? Observe whether the unreal mind will turn into a real thing? Observe whether the gods and demons are real or unreal. Second, relying on fear to eradicate self-grasping is: if fear arises, then become even more fearful, more afraid, and more nervous. Relying on that, see if you can find this unreal, wavering consciousness. You should observe the instigator of fear and what the cause of fear is. Third, relying on obstacles to eradicate samsara and nirvana is: the signs of obstacles coming, as well as the hope that they will not come, and the obstacles that have already arisen, along with real things, all of these are the magical manifestations of the mind.
