Suffering from karma, one engages in karma, revolving like a chain of water buckets. Before the ripening of past deeds is exhausted, one accumulates obscurations of future karma. One constantly revolves in samsara. Thus it is said. Thirdly, even the most excellent body that can attain Buddhahood in one lifetime and one body is impermanent. Machig said: This excellent body is also unstable, there is no certainty when one will die, death is certain, the lord of death is as swift as lightning in the sky, the body is like a lamp in the wind, like a water bubble, like dew on the tip of a blade of grass, not staying for even a moment, dying quickly. Meditate on impermanence in nine ways, contemplate the death of sentient beings you have seen and heard, and the many causes and conditions of death, thinking, "I will die right here and now." Even if it is not so, think that you will surely die within a month or next year, therefore you must generate the determination to abandon all compounded phenomena, so contemplating impermanence is the foremost of minds, therefore you should meditate on it in six sessions even in one day. Furthermore, the outer world, the four continents, Mount Meru, the seven golden mountains, the surrounding oceans, etc., are also destroyed by seven fires and one water, so they are impermanent. Likewise, towns and cities, dwellings, temples and monasteries are all destroyed by the elements without exception. Among the inner beings, Buddhas and Bodhisattvas who have crossed the river of birth, old age, sickness and death, those who have attained the Vajra body, as well as Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Panditas, and Siddhas, also depart showing the aspect of impermanence, what need is there to mention sentient beings who are tormented by strong karma and afflictions? Parents, relatives, and loved ones who cannot bear to part, those who do not want to die, when the time comes, no medicine, divination, rituals, power, etc., can prevent it, it could not in the past, it cannot now, and it will not be able to in the future.

Swift. Like a butter lamp in the body's wind energy, like a bubble in water. Like dew on the tip of a blade of grass. Not staying for even a moment, death is swift. Meditate on impermanence in nine ways, and contemplate the death of sentient beings you see and hear, and the many causes and conditions of death, etc. I am dying right here and now. Even if not, think that death will surely come within a month, or before next year. Therefore, one must generate the determination to abandon all compounded things, because contemplating impermanence is the main task of the mind, so it is said that even in one day, one should meditate in six sessions. Moreover, the outer world, the four continents, Mount Meru, the seven golden mountains, and the surrounding pleasure ocean, are also destroyed by seven fires and one water, so they are impermanent. Similarly, towns and cities, dwellings, temples, and all monasteries, are destroyed by the elements without any order. In terms of inner beings, even the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and those who have attained the Vajra body, who have crossed the river of birth, old age, sickness, and death, as well as the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, Panditas, and Siddhas, have passed away showing the aspect of impermanence. What need is there to mention sentient beings who are tormented by strong karma and afflictions? For parents, relatives, close friends, etc., who cannot bear to leave, and cannot bear to die, when the time of days, nights, years, and months arrives, no medicine, rituals, ceremonies, power, etc., can prevent it, it could not in the past, cannot now, and will not in the future. Therefore, this contaminated aggregate of appropriation of oneself has many harms from external conditions such as food, clothing, enemies, demons, fire, water, cliffs, etc., and internal conditions such as the aggregation of wind, bile, phlegm, etc., with four hundred and four kinds of disease thieves entering within, there is no opportunity for happiness and no place to escape from death. In terms of secret conditions, the five poisons in one's own continuum, coarse thoughts and actions are bad, and harboring resentment, hatred, jealousy, etc., towards others, even if there is a mustard seed's worth of remaining merit, it will be rendered meaningless. Since one does not know which will come first, the next life or tonight, one should now resolve to face death. Contemplating impermanence is the most supreme of all practices, so it is the essence of both outer and inner. This is an encouragement for practice, so keep it in your heart. If you contemplate impermanence inseparably like this, you will be disgusted with all the activities of this life.
