Having been born there, one must experience the fruits of both happiness and suffering, this is the fifth. Having seen the suffering of the lower realms as the result of karma, turning away from it, and thereby accomplishing the deeds of the happy realms, this is the sixth, which are the six root vows. Then, even seeing the state of the happy realms as the happiness of samsara, turning away from it, and thereby accomplishing the self-benefit of nirvana, this is one. Turning away from the self-benefit of nirvana, and thereby accomplishing the benefit of others, this is two. Thereby guarding the gate of the body, this is three. Guarding the gate of speech, this is four. Guarding the gate of mind, this is five. The distinction of food, this is six. The distinction of clothing and ornaments, this is seven. The distinction of dwelling places, this is eight. The distinction of residences, this is nine. The distinction of conduct, this is ten, which are the ten vows of the path. Then, taking refuge, this is one. Generating bodhicitta, this is two. Meditating on the yoga of the deity, this is three. Performing outer and inner offerings, this is four. Concluding with dedication and aspiration prayers, this is five, which are the five vows of the fruit. These are the twenty-one vows spoken by Machig Labdrön to her son Gyalwa Döndrup. To explain them in order: First, of the six root vows, first, there are three aspects to showing the difficulty of obtaining a human body: showing the difficulty of obtaining it through examples, showing the difficulty of obtaining it through numbers, Showing the difficulty of obtaining it through causes. Third, regarding taming one's own mindstream, Machig Dakini spoke of the three: the ground, the path, and the fruit. The first has six. Showing the difficulty of obtaining a human body, this is one. If it is obtained, then showing it to be superior to others, this is two. Even if it is superior, showing that it is easily destroyed, this is three. After it is destroyed, wandering through the realms of happiness and suffering due to karma, This is four.
