Therefore, as the root of pride in self-grasping gradually diminishes, the wisdom of selflessness gradually increases, thereby progressing step by step on the paths such as the accumulation path. Subduing the demons to be subdued and generating merits occur simultaneously, because if the demons to be subdued are not subdued, one cannot progress on the path. The demons of the path to be subdued must be eliminated from the initial entry into the Dharma up to the path of seeing. Even on the path of seeing, although the root of clinging to reality and afflictions is absent, one still needs to practice until Buddhahood is attained. There are also two types of pride: that which should be taken pride in and that which takes pride. Among them, that which should be taken pride in is ignorance, which is the root of clinging to reality and should be abandoned; that which takes pride is the self-aware wisdom that knows ignorance, which is the eliminator, so it does not need to be abandoned, and even if one wants to abandon it, it cannot be abandoned. That is to say, from the very beginning of engaging in elimination, the self-grasping that arises together with the mind of ignorance is the root of all faults, the source of all conceptual thoughts, and the mind of ignorance and darkness that confuses the mind and generates all afflictions, which should be taken pride in, must be eliminated by the wisdom of self-aware mind. Therefore, from the very beginning of entering the Dharma, it is very important to recognize the root of pride in self-grasping ignorance. However, it is impossible to completely eliminate ignorance from the beginning, because through continuous practice of selflessness, the root of pride in self-grasping gradually diminishes, and the wisdom of selflessness gradually increases, thereby progressing step by step on the paths such as the accumulation path. When the nature of that which takes pride, that is, when a special experience of realizing selflessness arises from the wisdom of awareness, the aforementioned merits of joy and so on will naturally arise.

Because it does not allow attainment, it is called the demon of fruition. Like the dream and illusion mentioned above, if it is taken as the path, it will enhance all qualities and accomplish the benefit of beings. Therefore, such joy and delight do not need to be abandoned, and even if one tries to abandon them, one cannot. For example, warmth If it encounters moisture, just as it is impossible to stop the growth of crops, it is not necessary to prevent the arising of perfect qualities. Whatever qualities arise, they should be taken as the path like an illusion. That is to say, attachment and non-attachment are both to be abandoned, while pride and joy are the means of abandonment. That is to say, at the time of complete fruition, there is neither what is to be abandoned nor the means of abandonment. ” Thus it is said. Having thus clearly recognized the classifications of the four demons and the methods of abandonment, one should practice in the unborn nature of mind, the great self-liberation in which there is no cutter or cut. Fifth, gods and demons, there are six categories. Machig said: Gods and demons of worldly imputation, gods and demons of essence and location, gods and demons of perceived delusion, gods and demons of innate nature, Gods and demons of unerring karma, and gods and demons of ultimate meaning, there are six in total. Each of these has two, gods and demons. Ultimately, there is no difference between gods and demons. For worldly people, gods are also demons, and demons are also gods, there is no certainty. The essence of pride is the realization of selflessness from the wisdom of awareness. When a special experience arises, the qualities of joy and delight, as mentioned above, arise along with it. Because it does not allow the attainment of Buddhahood, it is called the demon of fruition.
