Embrace with courageous diligence and expand the mind of benefiting others! Thus it was said. Again, Ganga asked Machig, are these four maras cut off all at once? Or is there a difference in sequence? Is there a difference of before and after in the four maras? Machig replied: Son, the two, with attachment and without attachment, are the maras of the time of cause, the mara of mental activity is the mara of the time of the path, and the mara of joy and sorrow is the mara of the time of fruition. That is, those who have not attained the ground, those who dwell below the accumulation path and the joining path, are worldly paths. Therefore, at that time, the body of reliance is powerful, and the power of the mind of reliance is not great, so worldly sufferings such as diseases come involuntarily without wanting them. And because there is no pure direct perception and magical power, there is actual attachment to things that have the nature of objects, such as the four elements. Therefore, at the time of the two, accumulation and joining, it is difficult to actually cut off the mara of attachment. Therefore, at that time, one should practice on the mind. Therefore, when there is self, there is also mara. When there is no self, there is also no mara. Because there is no self, there is no object to be cut off, and that great wisdom of awareness, which is without fear and dread, and is without limit, increases wisdom in all that is to be known, and is the fruit of liberation from the four maras. That is, what are the categories of the four maras, and the difference in how to be liberated in one's own place by cutting off the four maras, and ultimately attain the fruit, may those with fortune keep in mind these words of little explanation.

At that time, although one does not wish it, it comes involuntarily, and since there is no pure clairvoyance and magical power, there is actual obstruction to things that have the nature of objects such as earth, water, fire, and wind. Therefore, during the stages of accumulation and application, it is difficult to actually cut off the obstructing demons. At that time, one should practice on the mind. When the first ground is attained, because the mind is powerful, by the power of gaining mastery over clairvoyance and magical powers, although one is free from all the characteristics of objects such as the four elements of earth, water, fire, and wind, poison, weapons, cliffs, and so on, it is still difficult to practice until one reaches the Buddha's ground. No matter how hard one practices, there is no suffering for body and mind. Below the path of application, one should cut off the unobstructed demons, which are the illusions of gods and demons, the suffering of diseases, attachment and aversion, the eight worldly concerns, and so on. Even if one has not attained the ground, one can cut them off if one has a person with great antidotal power, and one must cut them off. From the very beginning of cutting off, the self-grasping that arises together with the mind of ignorance, the root of all faults, the basis of all conceptual thoughts, the deluded mind, and the mind of darkness of ignorance that should be blamed for generating all afflictions, should be cut off by the wisdom of self-awareness. From the very beginning of entering the Dharma, it is very important to know the root of the pride of self-grasping ignorance, but ignorance cannot be completely cut off from the beginning, so one should constantly practice non-self.
