That awareness which is unattached to anything, when it is separated from the mind of clinging to reality, and meets with the meaning of emptiness like the sky, is the cutting of the demon of pride. When the demon of pride is cut, all the demons arising from afflictions are cut. The so-called demon of pride is: Since the root of all three demons lies in pride, it is extremely important to cut the root of the mind. And pride refers to self-grasping, because the root of all faults that wander in samsara lies in self-grasping, it acts like a demon that does not allow one to obtain liberation. Therefore, it is also called the demon of the mind, or the demon of self-grasping. Because of grasping onto self where there is no self, the mind becomes afflicted. When any good or bad thoughts arise in the mind, they are all grasped by discrimination and clung to as real, this is called pride. That is, the so-called object of pride, and the one who possesses the object of pride. Or, when all internal and external phenomena of grasping onto "I" and "mine" are realized by the wisdom of self-awareness as not truly established, the root of clinging to reality is cut off from the object. Without losing pride in all good and bad thoughts, separated from all the extremes of mental proliferation of attention and aspiration, that which is not fabricated by the mind, the emptiness, the loose and clear mind that destroys self-grasping, the clarity that cannot be shaken by the causes of afflictions, the lucidity of awareness that is separated from the grasping of inner and outer, that awareness which is unattached to anything, when it is separated from the mind of clinging to reality, and meets with the meaning of emptiness like the sky, is the cutting of the demon of pride. When the demon of pride is cut, all the demons arising from afflictions are cut. Therefore, when there is self, there is also demon. When there is no self, there is also no demon. Since there is no self, there is no object to be cut, that great wisdom of awareness that is without fear and anxiety, and free from all extremes, increases intelligence in all that is to be known, and is the fruit of liberation from the four demons. That is, a brief explanation of the types of the four demons, and how by cutting the four demons one is liberated in one's own nature, and ultimately obtains the ultimate fruit. May those with fortune keep these words and their meaning in mind, with fierce diligence!
