Furthermore, there are four types of demons: the demon with obstacles, the demon without obstacles, the demon of joy and elation, and the demon of pride, as well as the demon of self-grasping. The demon with obstacles refers to seeing forms with the eyes, developing attachment to beautiful forms and hatred towards ugly forms. Similarly, with the ears, nose, tongue, body, and their respective sensory objects such as sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations, attachment arises towards the pleasant and hatred towards the unpleasant. Therefore, these are regarded as demons of attachment and aversion. Because of attachment and aversion to things that actually exist in the realm of the senses, the senses are actually obstructed, causing harm to the mind, and becoming a chain that binds one to samsara, hence they are called demons. Because one is obstructed by good and bad things that actually exist and becomes a demon, it is called the demon with obstacles. Therefore, attachment and clinging to anything, good or bad, is a demon, so one should abandon attachment and clinging to anything. That is to say, form is emptiness in its very nature as the essence of form, and because form itself has no inherent existence, one should not develop attachment or aversion to form, but should meditate on its very nature of emptiness. The appearance of form cannot be denied, but do not grasp it as true, it is merely an appearance. By abandoning attachment to mere appearance, one is liberated from form. Similarly, sounds, smells, tastes, and tactile sensations are the same, so keep this in mind. The demon without obstacles refers to when something does not actually appear in the realm of the senses, but any good or bad thoughts that arise in one's mind, if one clings to the fear of "ghosts" and feels afraid, or clings to the joy of "gods" and feels relaxed and happy, thus clinging to both good and bad thoughts in the mind, the mind becomes afflicted. Although affliction has no actual obstruction and does not actually exist in things, it can certainly cause the mind to indulge in unwholesome actions, and this harm is called a demon. That is to say, because it has no actual existence and no actual obstruction, it is called the demon without obstacles. Therefore, the very mind that considers gods to be good, ghosts to be bad, and clings to other things as faults and virtues,

Since from the very beginning, there is not even a hair's breadth of inherent existence, one should recognize it as emptiness, devoid of foundation and root. Do not obstruct the arising sensations and other appearances in the mind. Do not obstruct whatever good or bad thoughts arise. Do not engage in conceptualization. Whatever memories or thoughts arise, do not rely on the mind or be grasped by thoughts. The nature of mind is the clear, vast expanse, and any memories or thoughts that arise are like waves arising in the ocean, even when there is no one to stir it. Likewise, do not manipulate or alter whatever thoughts arise in the mind, but leave them in their natural state, and you will effortlessly subdue the power of demons. Abandon the grasping and clinging of the mind, relax the body and mind without movement, and the unobstructed demon will be liberated in its own place. Similarly, sounds, smells, tastes, touch, and so on are all the same, so keep them in mind. The activity of the unobstructed demon is that, although it does not appear directly in the realm of the senses, when any good or bad thoughts arise in one's mind, if one grasps at the fear of a ghost, one becomes afraid; if one grasps at the joy of a god, one becomes complacent and delighted. Thus, by grasping at the two kinds of good and bad thoughts in the mind, the mind becomes afflicted. Although that affliction has no real obstruction and no real object, it can certainly cause the harm of the mind indulging in unwholesome actions, and that is called a demon. Since it has no real existence and no real obstruction, it is called the unobstructed demon. Therefore, the very mind that clings to the so-called good of gods, the so-called evil of ghosts, and the faults and qualities of those and other things, from the very beginning, has no inherent existence, not even a hair's breadth. Therefore, one should recognize it as emptiness, devoid of foundation and root. Do not obstruct the arising sensations and other appearances in the mind. Do not obstruct whatever good or bad thoughts arise. Do not engage in conceptualization. Whatever memories or thoughts arise, do not rely on the mind or be grasped by thoughts. The nature of mind is the clear, vast expanse.
