The arrogant and conceited, sever the bonds of conditioned realms, sever the bonds of unconditioned mind, sever the attachment of joy and conceit, sever the bonds of self-grasping conceit. Thus it is said. The four maras that obstruct the bhumis and paths are: the mara of views is biased towards sects, the mara of meditation is dullness and agitation, the mara of conduct is hypocrisy, the mara of results is hope and doubt. If one clings to duality, no matter how much effort is made, one cannot be liberated from samsara. Therefore, practice itself is a mara. When the previous thought has ceased and the subsequent thought has not arisen, the naked moment of awareness, unpolluted by any experience or realization, is the Dharmakaya, is the view, is the meditation, is the conduct and the result. Therefore, recognize it, abide in it, and remain free from arrogance and conceit. Do not gather inwards, do not scatter outwards, do not conceptualize in between, let awareness abide nakedly. Abandon all effort in practice, and without letting subsequent awareness follow external conditions, maintain the sharpness of awareness. Like raising a lamp in the darkness, the maras will naturally be pacified, liberated, purified, and awaken in their own place, and all dharmas will return to the place of cessation. Thus it is said. The second is: the root and branches. The first has four: the mara of the aggregates, the mara of the son of the gods, the mara of afflictions, and the mara of death. The first is the contaminated aggregates of appropriation that arise from one's own causes due to the influence of afflictions. The second is the Other-Creating Power, the son of the gods called Joyful Power, the lord of the desire realm. This mara binds a garland of flowers of distraction and grasping to the crown of the head of practitioners. The third is the five poisons of afflictions. The fourth is the parts where the life force is cut off without autonomy. The second, the branch maras, are eighteen: First, the mara of clinging to the pursuit of enlightenment. Second, the mara of magical powers that create obstacles. Third, the mara of conditioned objects. Fourth, the mara of unconditioned mind. Fifth, the mara that distracts from qualities. Sixth, the mara of pride in experience. Seventh, awareness also becomes a binding mara. Eighth, the mara of subtle discriminations. Ninth, the mara of the mind of pride and arrogance. Tenth, the mara of jealousy and slandering others. Eleventh, the mara of dullness and agitation of awareness. Twelfth, the mara of abandoning and laziness. Thirteenth, the mara of hatred and anger. Greed etc.

The demon of lustful wrong livelihood, the demon of knowledge being taken away, the demon of depression and oppression, the demon of extreme anger and entanglement, the demon of changing colors, totaling eighteen types. For those with superior faculties, whatever demon arises, do not be afraid or apprehensive, but rest in the state of non-conceptual equality. For those with intermediate faculties, seek the knower, understand that the demon is one's own mind, and rest in the state of knowing that one's own mind is unborn in nature. For those with inferior faculties, give the body to the obstructing forces that cause harm, and rest the mind in a state of non-thought and non-action. The above is a brief instruction on how to recognize what to abandon and what to cultivate, as well as a detailed explanation of it. Machig Labdrön condensed these demons into four categories and taught them. The so-called demon is not something with a large shape and black color that causes fear and dread in whoever sees it, nor is it something that exists as a real entity. The third is the five poisons of afflictions. The fourth is the parts where the life force is interrupted without autonomy. The second is the eighteen branch demons: first, the demon of clinging to the achievement of enlightenment; the demon of performing miracles that create obstacles; the demon of tangible objects with obstruction; the demon of unobstructed mind; the demon of distracting qualities; the demon of pride in experience; the demon of intelligence that is also cunning; the demon of subtle discriminations; the demon of arrogance and pride in the mind; the demon of jealousy and criticizing others; the demon of sinking and excitement of consciousness; the demon of abandoning laziness; the demon of hatred and anger. The demon of lustful wrong livelihood, the demon of knowledge being taken away, the demon of depression and oppression, the demon of extreme anger and entanglement, the demon of changing colors, totaling eighteen types.
