Moreover, even beloved and cherished relatives and friends can become obstacles to liberation. In particular, there is no greater demon than this self-grasping. If self-grasping is not severed, all demons arise from it. Therefore, one must strive diligently to cut off the demon of self-grasping, and at the same time cut off the three demons born from self-grasping. Oṃ! Furthermore, one must cut off. There are four kinds of demons. If named, they are the demon with obstacles and the demon without obstacles, the demon of joy and elation and the demon of pride, and the demon of self-grasping, these four. The so-called demon with obstacles is when the eye sees forms, attachment arises to beautiful forms, and hatred arises to ugly forms. Similarly, with the ear, nose, tongue, body, and the objects of these senses, sound, smell, taste, and touch, attachment arises to the good, and hatred arises to the bad. Therefore, this is called the demon of grasping at attachment and hatred. Because one is attached to and hates objects that actually exist in the realm of the senses, and because the senses actually cause harm to the mind, it becomes a chain that binds one to samsara, so it is called a demon. And because one is attached to good and bad objects that actually exist, and thus becomes a demon, it is called a demon with obstacles. Therefore, whatever one is attached to and clings to, whether good or bad, is a demon. Therefore, one should abandon clinging and attachment to anything. That is, form is empty in its very essence of form. Because form itself is without inherent existence, one should not be attached to or hate form, but should meditate on emptiness of inherent existence. The appearance of form cannot be denied, but do not grasp it as true, it is merely appearance. By abandoning attachment to mere appearance, one is liberated from form. That which is called a demon is anything that becomes an obstacle to achieving liberation. Therefore, even beloved and cherished relatives and friends can become obstacles to liberation.
