Just like going to the battlefield, one needs to wear armor. The holy one said: "With the mind to achieve liberation for oneself, abandon noise, attachment, hatred, and bias. With trust, faith, and asceticism, even if the three doors turn to dust, strive on." Because faith and diligence must be inseparable. Because of being lazy and dull, one enters into diligence, therefore it is called asceticism. Therefore, one must generate trust in one's own mind-stream through the union of such faith and diligence. Therefore, generating faith by relying on the faults of samsara will be explained below. Thus, believing in the truth of karma and its results, having faith in the Three Jewels, and having faith of desire and thought, is called faith. Furthermore, not abandoning the Dharma due to desire is: Even if you are told that you will be given food, wealth, women, and kingship, etc., if you abandon the Dharma, you will not abandon it because you are controlled by desire. Not abandoning the Dharma due to hatred is: From the perspective of anger, even if others have caused great harm to oneself in the past, and are still causing great harm now, one will not abandon the Dharma. Not abandoning the Dharma due to fear is: From the perspective of fear, one will not abandon it. Even if it is said that if you do not abandon the Dharma, five ounces of flesh will be cut from your body every day, or you will be thrown into cliffs, fire, water, etc., or your life will be cut off, you will not abandon it. Not abandoning the Dharma due to ignorance is: From the perspective of ignorance, one will not abandon it. Even if it is said that karma is not true, results are not true, the Three Jewels are not true, what is the use of practicing the Dharma, one will not abandon it, etc. These faithful ones are supreme vessels for achieving Buddhahood. "Abandon noise, attachment, hatred, and bias. With trust, faith, and asceticism, even if the three doors turn to dust, strive on." Because faith and diligence must be inseparable.

Furthermore, even if told to "abandon the Dharma," one does not abandon it because one is dominated by desire. Not abandoning the Dharma due to hatred is: from the aspect of anger, others have already caused great harm to oneself in the past, and it seems that they will continue to cause great harm, but one still does not abandon the Dharma. Not abandoning the Dharma due to fear is: from the aspect of fear, one does not abandon it, even if told, "If you do not abandon the Dharma, five ounces of flesh will be cut from your body every day," or if told that you will be thrown into a cliff, fire, water, etc., or that your life will be cut off, one still does not abandon it. Not abandoning the Dharma due to ignorance is: from the aspect of not understanding, one does not abandon it, even if told, "Karma is not real, results are not real, the Three Jewels are not real, what is the use of practicing the Dharma," one still does not abandon it, etc. These are all those who have faith and become supreme vessels for accomplishing Buddhahood. If one has such faith, there are immeasurable benefits. Faith is the white hero who can overcome all wrong views, etc. It is the basis of all Dharmas, the source of all qualities, the remover of doubt and uncertainty, the great ship that liberates from the four rivers of birth, old age, sickness, and death, the temporary benefit and ultimate happiness, the one who is free from delusion and has a pure mind, I It is accompanied by victory, the root of all reverence, the accumulator of all virtues, the inexhaustible treasure of qualities, like the wish-fulfilling jewel wheel that is superior to all wealth. It is the feet that walk on the path to liberation and omniscience, the arising of the mind of a supreme being, the abandonment of unfavorable conditions, the sharpness and clarity of the faculties, the non-decline of morality, the destruction of afflictions, the liberation from the realm of demons, the ability to find the path of liberation, the accumulation of vast virtues, the ability to see many Buddhas, being blessed by them, having faith in the conduct of the Buddhas, having faith in unsurpassed enlightenment, the arising of the mind of noble beings in one's own mindstream, the Buddhas, the Bhagavad-Tathagatas also come to him and teach the Dharma, and being regarded by the Buddhas as a vessel of Dharma, etc., have immeasurable benefits. If one has such faith, there are immeasurable benefits. Faith is the white hero who can overcome all wrong views, etc. It is the basis of all Dharmas, the source of all qualities.

The origin of this. Dispelling doubts and uncertainties. A great ship that ferries across the four rivers of birth, aging, sickness, and death. Temporary benefit and ultimate happiness. Free from delusion and with a pure mind. I ༄༅། །Free from strife, the root of all reverence. Gathering all virtues. A treasure of inexhaustible qualities. Like the supreme of all wealth, the precious wheel. The feet that walk the path to liberation and omniscience. The arising of the mind of a supreme being. Abandoning unfavorable circumstances. Faculties sharp and clear. Morality undiminished. Subduing afflictions. Freedom from the realm of demons. Becoming able to find the path to liberation. Accumulating vast merit. Seeing many Buddhas. Being blessed by them. Having faith in the conduct of the Buddhas. Having faith in unsurpassed enlightenment. The minds of holy beings arising in one's own mindstream. The Buddhas, the Bhagavat, also come before them and teach the Dharma. And being regarded by the Buddhas as vessels of Dharma, etc., having immeasurable benefits. Therefore, there are four causes for generating faith: Relying on a virtuous spiritual friend. Associating with good friends who have faith. Contemplating death and fearing the faults of cause and effect and samsara. And studying the sutras. If there is no faith, even if the Dharma and the lama are good, it is of no benefit. Understanding parts of the Dharma and associating with the lama, demons will enter. Like water and a stone together, even if they stay together for millions of years, the stone itself remains dry. If there is no faith, even if one obtains much Dharma, even if one relies on a hundred thousand lamas, one cannot subdue afflictions. The number of times one relies on a lama and the number of times one listens to the Dharma, all become aids to fuel the flames of affliction. Furthermore, even if there is faith in the mindstream, one is controlled by distraction and laziness, and one's life is wasted with faith, missing the opportunity to practice the Dharma. Therefore, diligence is a particularly excellent companion to the five perfections. Therefore, faith and diligence must be inseparable. As one mother said: Small faith and diligence are like a bell put in a bag. Like a good field ruined by neglect. Like forgetting the weight on a scale. Even if there is a cause, there is no condition. Even if faith is great, one remains an ordinary person. One will not transform into a noble being.
