to strive in practice.” And, the venerable one said, “May the three gurus, Kadam, etc., be happy.” As stated in the context of the six joys, etc., one should please the venerable guru. Secondly, regarding how to listen to the Dharma, one should abandon the three faults, the six stains, the five non-retentions, etc., and listen properly. There are three aspects to this: faith, motivation, and conduct. The second aspect has two parts: relying on the guru with both intention and action, and how to listen to the Dharma. The first aspect is: if one possesses all the above qualities, that is excellent; possessing half is middling; in the worst case, due to the times, one must not be without someone who does not break their vows and practices the instructions of Chö. Therefore, one should first proceed with investigation through thought. Moreover, without relying on a guru, even if one has great wisdom, one will not attain enlightenment through self-invention and imitation. Therefore, it is necessary to rely on a guru. The way is: Ma Chik said, “It is most important to rely on a noble spiritual friend. It is most important to absorb the instructions into one’s heart. Until understanding is gained, do not make a decision based on pleasant words alone.” And, when entering the path, ༄༅། །first, rely on the guru and listen to the instructions; in the middle, be skilled in how to keep vows and pray without laziness; finally, please the guru through practice. To summarize the ways of relying on the guru with both intention and action: In the Le'u lag, it says, “The stages of entering the path are: first, please the guru and receive the instructions of empowerment; in the middle, protect the vows and constantly pray without separation; finally, renounce the world and always strive in practice.” And, the venerable one said, “May the three gurus, Kadam, etc., be happy.” As stated in the context of the six joys, etc., one should please the venerable guru. Secondly, regarding how to listen to the Dharma, one should abandon the three faults, the six stains, the five non-retentions, etc., and listen properly. There are three aspects to this: faith, motivation, and conduct. First, from the mouth of the venerable one, “Especially the guru’s boatman, through the disciple’s faith, respect, and devotion, moistens with blessings, instructions, and nectar.” As it is said, without faith, all white dharmas will not arise in the continuum, just as a seed is burned by fire and the sprout of enlightenment will not arise. Therefore, one should generate the cause—faith—and the companion—diligence. Faith has four aspects: trusting faith, desiring

of faith. The faith of conviction. The irreversible faith, and so on, are four types. First, the faith of conviction is: the result, the truth of suffering, arises dependent on the truth of the origin, that is, believing that the two causes of good and evil will lead to the two results of happiness and suffering in the desire realm. Believing that the result of the karma of an unmoved mind will lead to the happiness of the two upper realms. Believing that the truth of the origin, through actions, karma, and afflictions, will lead to obtaining the truth of suffering, that is, the five aggregates with outflows. Therefore, Machig said, "Faith is like fertile land, diligence is like good water and fertilizer." Just as any black and white seeds sown in fertile land will bear fruit accordingly. Second, the faith of desire is: to diligently study the path with reverence in order to perfect enlightenment in one lifetime. As she said, "Faith is like a docile sheep, diligence is like a virtuous woman." Therefore, one should study the perfection of proliferation and desire.

In order to achieve enlightenment, one should learn the path with reverence. As it is said, "Faith is like a ewe, diligence is like a wise woman." Therefore, one should learn to increase and fulfill one's wishes. Third, generating faith: it arises from relying on the Lama and the Three Jewels, viewing the Lama as the essence of the teacher, the path, and the companion for accomplishing the path, and generating faith with reverence. As it is said, "Faith is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, diligence is like offerings and service." Just as offering with reverence to a wish-fulfilling jewel causes it to rain down the desired nectar, the Lama is like a wish-fulfilling jewel, and by requesting with faith, one can obtain the desired things of both the common and the supreme. Fourth, irreversible faith: until hearing, thinking, and meditating are completed, one should endure hardships and persevere, and no matter what good or bad circumstances arise, such as illness, suffering, enemies, obstacles, or unwarranted accusations, one should not turn back from hearing, thinking, and meditating on the sacred Dharma. As it is said, "Faith is like a merchant, diligence is like a good captain, with faith and diligence, nothing is impossible." Just as one enters the great ocean without turning back in order to obtain the wish-fulfilling jewel, one must endure hardships for the sake of the Dharma until one obtains the three kayas of precious jewels, and ultimately reach the other shore. There are three types of diligence: applying diligence, insatiable diligence, and armor-like diligence. First, applying diligence has three aspects: Desire and other afflictions, and the actions they cause, are the root of suffering and will obstruct enlightenment for a long time, therefore one should abandon all afflictions; one should strive without regard for body or life for all virtuous deeds such as the six perfections; and one should do things that benefit beings, such as helping those who have no help in the affairs of sentient beings. Third, generating faith: it arises from relying on the Lama and the Three Jewels, viewing the Lama as the collection of the teacher, the path, and the companion for accomplishing the path.
